My name is Liz and I am a 23 y/o SAHM of a 9 month old son.

My husband was diagnosed with Crohn's this past Wednesday. He has been experiencing heavy rectal bleeding for weeks and finally had a colonoscopy (sp?).

When the biopsy returned from the lab the colon and rectal dr informed us that he has Crohn's.

He has not met with his gastroenterologist yet. Al I know is that he has lost around 17 lbs in ruffly 6 weeks.

I was hoping for a few words of encouragement, and what we should expect from this point..

Thank you in advance and I look forward to our future conversations! :)

I hope your husband gets better soon. After my colonoscopy I had to do a bunch of blood tests, stool samples, and an upper GI series. None of them all that bad and worth it if you ask me so they can see everywhere the disease is. I am currently on a 5 ASA called Asacol. Not sure if it is working all that well, still have cramping and diarrhea a lot though it is a lot better than before. I drink 3 Ensure drinks a day and have gained some of my weight back...I had lost about 35 lbs. in 6 months the last 20 of it I think in about 6 weeks like your husband. Was really scary for me as I hated the doctor...was afraid to go so I avoided it for a long time.

Anyway, if your husband pays attention to the foods that irritate his system and stays away from them, takes his medications "religiously" as my dr. put it, and keeps stress levels down he should feel better. The disease does suck and can be unpredictable, but I am hopeful that through what I have just stated it can be manageable. I have only been diagnosed for a couple of months myself so it is very new to me too. Good luck to you both and I am sure things will get better.

Hi and welcome. One helpful piece of advice I would give to you is to be very patient and understanding. He might be very tired lately, and not be able to do as much around the house. My husband had a tough time understanding that at first until I told him, "Imagine that you have the flu, and are going to the bathroom all the time, but it doesn't just go away in a week." I saw a lightbulb go off in his head, and he FINALLY got it.
Good luck, reading posts here will teach you a lot!
Let us know how he gets on.

Wow. I defiantly was not expecting such heartfelt responses. I see that I came to the right place. To be honest I am scared to death. Just a few months ago everything was ok..u know? No matter what I will be here with him every step of the way.

He is also taking Asacol. It is so expensive! I guess this med alone will cost over $60 a month..

The net has such a variety of info, I'm not sure what to believe..

I have him drinking hi protein reduced fat milk, eating cheese, fruit (well grapes right now) peanut butter, yogurt, and multi-vitamin water flavor packs.. things like this. I read high protein and good fats.. Like I said the info is so diverse..I just read that dairy may be bad, so now I'm doubly confused!

I guess only time will tell..

Thank you so much for the warm welcome.

Yea..right now it is hard to tell. I kind of thought I am giving him too much dairy. The thing is he doesn't have diarrhea and his stomach pain is very minimal. I am trying to tell him that he needs to pay very close attn to his body so we can find out his triggers. I am just so worried about the bleeding..It is a lot and every time he has a bm. I will be a bit more relieved when he visits the dr..

Come on Monday the 18th!!

Where are you from? Do you have a drug plan? Take care, let us know how his appt goes!

Thanks for the info on the enzymes.. I love details! We are in Houston, Texas.. He does IT work for a major cancer hospital so thank God we have excellent health insurance.

I was thinking of looking into mail order..doing a price comparison.. I think Jared may join once he's been to the GI. I think it would be great for him to get incite fro those of you who are over the initial shock. I try not to worry but I am just thinking of the future. I know there are surgeries that may need to be had and there is my son.. I know this is genetic.the thing is no 1 knows who has this in his family. I am hoping and praying that it is a misdiagnoses.

Guess we will see.. On a lighter not. How to I post an avatar pic?

Hello there Worried!

I am a bleeder also...I was diagnosed 12 years ago. The bleeding can be very scary...and dangerous. But also keep in mind that most the time it looks like more than it is. (Not to minimize the seriousness of it!) There have been two times that I have lost so much blood that I needed to have transfusions. Thank heavens for blood donors!!!

I find that raw veggies, most dairy (cheese seems to be ok) and anything with nuts in it send my guts into a tail spin that takes a while to recover from. Milk, and ice cream seem to be the absolute worst of the dairies for me.

As far as medicine to help it...sometimes it depends on where the blood is actually coming from. Dark red blood indicates that it is somewhere actually inside the colon or intestines...a bright red blood is usually a sign that it is closer to the surface - a fissure possibly. When mine has been from inside...the dr puts me on prednisone....the wonder drug everyone loves to hate! If it is from the fissure I use proctofoam - also a steroid treatment but much friendlier!

I hope this is a little bit helpful...good luck at the dr Monday!

Promise
