ok.. I got a letter in the mail for an appointment for a small bowel series. Oct 13, 8:00 am. The prep they gave suggest is called senekot liquid. Has anyone tried this one? I'm hoping it ok tasting, says it's only 100 ml.

Yikes, it says it takes 2-5 hours!!!! I don't remember it taken that long before.
Guess Canadian Thanksgiving is not going to happen for me :( It's one of my favorite holidays.

I don't remember having to do prep for my small bowel series....they just had me drink 2 big cups of barium type stuff and then a WHOLE BUNCH of x-rays, like every 15 min. At the time I was moving so fast it only took like 1 1/2 hours, they said it might take up to 6. The barium makes your poo a different color, but it actually binded me up some. I didn't mind the whole process at all.

I do think I couldn't eat after midnight the night before and only clear liquids....not sure..too many scopes that come into mind I guess.....

Hey Jonhenry, thanks for the reply. I wonder why some have to empty their bowels and some not? Maybe because I'm eating foods again as opposed to just the liquid broths and ensure stuff. They did say to avoid crunchy vegetables, cabbage whole grains, nuts and seeds the day prior to the test. Crap, can't drink after midnight either, nor smoke or chew gum the morning of.

Yea, it was just clear fluids for me. At the time I was on pure liquid "peeing out the wrong end" type D. So I guess they didn't think I needed prep or something.... They said the stuff you drink is nasty but I downed it no problem and it sat in me fine. Just turned my poo white, but it was formed instead of solid! It's much less of a big deal than a scope in my point of view.

I've never had to do any prep for this test? I was on a regular diet both times. Maybe things will move faster for you all emptied out? Bring lots of reading material. Good luck!

I finally did my my prep for the small bowel series yesterday early eve. All I can say is YUCK! I drank a 100ml bottle of senokot liquid that tasted like alcohol chocolaty molasses with 5 cups of sugar added. I thought I'd be running to the bathroom every min, but instead... I took it at 5:00 pm, didn't feel anything till 10:30 pm then got some cramping and was able to go some. Then 2 hours later a little more (12:30ish), after 2am slight bit more and once more after 3:30 am. The cramping was no fun :(

Then I was off to the hospital for the actual test after 7am, I was so tired. I drank two cups of the barium and this time I have to say that the actual prep was worse! I hope the results come back soon.

Now my innards are mad mad mad, I feel crampy, sore all over the abdominal area and under the rib cage. Is this a normal feeling after a prep? Hope it doesn't kick things into a flare. I can only take my miserable self off to bed and relax, might try to eat something to get this chalky stuff moving out of my system.

Hi santos, I'm more of C girl. It was a mild prep laxative but sheesh it wreaks havoc on my body. I'll keep my fingers crossed that things will be better in a couple days.

Thanks for your replay :)

I have this same test tomorrow. Give it to me straight, how bad does this barium stuff taste? Anything you would do differently next time around such as bringing a good book vs. magazine, etc? When I'm sick to my stomach I can't really concentrate on books so I was wondering if they let you bring an ipod to listen to? I have some npr podcasts I could catch up on. Any info at all would be appreciated. Also how long before you know the results? If they find a blockage will they keep you or call you in a few days?

Sorry for bogartin' the thread but I'm starting to freak a little :/

Well I finished the test and am in a ton of pain and trying to drink some water now. The woman who did the test said she found no abnormalities other than reflux so is that it I guess? No crohn's unless they find something in the colonoscopy?

I didnt have to do a prep for this test either besides not eating for 12 hours before. The test lasts a few hours but its the easiest test ever!! No needles, just lots of lying in different positions so they can take pics and drinking stuff in between them. I would rather have that test over all the others any day :) Except its chilly walking and lying around in that dang hospital gown lol. Good luck to you doll!!
