small intestine surgery

hi there,
if you have surgery for crohns on small intestine, 30 cms, is it a given that you require a temporary bag while heasling from surgery that is reversed. my dr never mentioned a word about that when he discussed surgery but a friend thinks that its a given? the crohns is in the terminal ilium, 30cms. thanks, Kelly

They didn't with me and I had 1 Metre removed but I guess each case is different .They did tell me it was a possibility and they know till they opened me up.Good luck with your operation.

No it is not a given.

Sarah had emergency surgery and 68cm removed, Matt had planned surgery and 28.5cm removed, neither had a temp stoma.

It is very much dependent on what they find when they get in there and importantly how extensive and acute the inflammation is. If it is contained to that 30cm, and of a chronic nature, and there are no unexpected complications then there should be no need for a temporary stoma.

I did not have to have a bag, but like the others, I was told that if they went in and the inflammation was too bad to connect everything safely, that I would have a temporary bag. They made it clear that it was a possibility, but I did not have to have one and they removed 2 ft. of terminal ileum and 1 ft. of colon. I know ya'll are metric people, but my brain is fried. I know there are 2.54 cms per inch so somewhere around 90 cms?
