I had a upper gi series the other day and they saw a duodenal ulcer which is very common but then they also want a egd scope and now the hypocondriact in me is going crazy my anxiety is so high I can't breathe please someone give me some reasoning for the test cause I've already planned how I'm gonna tell my family I got cancer!!!! I've already planned my burial plot and all because these stupid test they said they found a ulcer nothing else but that was enough to send me over the deep end!! Also I gotta wait tel Friday to do the scope that's 3 more days of worrying they well have to admit way before then!! Ten if they have to do a biopcey which they always do tey might as well check me into the crazy ward!! Help!!

Sweetie you really! Need to calm down. Ulcers are very common. My dad got one and he doesn't even have crohns. I know it's hard not to get stressed with so many tests and things but it really won't help you. Take a deep breath and remember that ulcers are really common and it does not mean you have cancer. It is far more likely to be the result of some sort of medication from the past or maybe the crohns. I was covered in ulcers when I had my scope and my GI was not phased in the slightest. Relax, this isn't going to make things any better for you. And please resist looking things up on Google.

I think you would benefit from seeing someone about your anxiety.

Hi Jison0612, sorry that you're going through so much stress. If an ulcer was found during an imaging test like a small bowel follow through etc then its very common to want to get a better look and take a biopsy to figure out the cause of the ulcer so it can be properly treated and hopefully prevent more in the future. At first when you mentioned cancer I was pretty confused because ulcers are quite common with Crohn's yet stomach cancer is listed as a possible cause but is less often and is listed under "refractory ulcers" or ulcers that don't heal with treatment. So far you have an ulcer yet haven't even figured out the cause and certainly haven't tried treatment as far as I'm aware.

The most common cause of Peptic ulcers are Helicobacter pylori bacteria (treated with antibiotics), frequent use of NSAIDs (such as Ibuprofen etc), and certain medications as mentioned above. You can read all about them here: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/peptic-ulcer/DS00242 but I wouldn't focus on the less likely cause of stomach cancer. So do your best to relax. We all have this test done and many of us on a fairly regular basis. Everything's going to be ok. :) Keep us posted on the results and how you're feeling. *HUGS*

Thanks guys I'm just a freak I need some anxiety meds I thank cause I can't Handel these test the wait drives me literally crazy my mom has had stomach ulcers her whole life there not that big of a deal but in my twisted mind I'm gonna be the one who's ulcer is cancerous and I don't know why I thank like that? Hopefully it goes away with age if not its gonna be a long road

My son had many duodenal ulcers. They put him on Prevacid (and crohn's meds) and he is doing very well now.

I know this is all very overwhelming but don't let your fears take control. There are lots of coping mechanisms you can use to help deal with anxiety, talk to your GI if you feel overwhelmed and he can recommend someone for you to talk to that will help you get your feelings under control.

((((Hugs))))) Let us know how you are doing:)
