My son is 10 and he has been taking imuran for a few months now. The past few weeks he has been throwing up about a hour after he takes it. He completely empties out his stomach. But he is fine after and then all day. This has been going on for a few weeks now and he is taking Previcid to help the vomiting but it's been a week and it has not helped at all. Any advice would be wonderful. I feel so bad for my baby boy.

What time does he take it? When my son was on 6mp, we were told to give it just before bed to avoid nausea.

My son does no food or milk products for 1 hour before he takes 6mp. We also take it right before bed so he can sleep through nausea. Zofran will help but we once gave my son zofran while nauseated right before bed and he was vomiting while half asleep and hour later. NOT good. He ended up having a reaction to some food with MSG in it, the zofran works well but in this case the offending food had to go. I would think if his is just from nausea with the meds this would not happen but I wanted to give you a heads up.

What I would talk to the GI about is why this is happening a few months into taking the Imuran. If he has nausea it should start from the beginning. Did they just up the dose? My son usually adjusted about 2 weeks after having his dose upped. Also, the GI said the dose it probably too high if he is having a side effect like vomiting.

Hope you get this figured out. ((((Hugs)))))

Has he had blood work done recently??? That is what happen to me and I was having a reaction to the medications. I would call the GI they usually don't draw the liver functions until month 6. But worth asking to see hoping that he feels better soon!!

Also ask the Gi about it being a sign of a flare .
For DS he would vomit like that then be fine . Rinse repeat.
Zofran only helped if he took it at the first sign of nausea .
Once his crohn's was under control the vomiting stopped .

Spencer 1402, sorry to hear of your son's tummy trouble. My 8 yr old son had a reaction to Imuran, but it happened within 10 days or so of starting the drug. He also wasn't throwing up, but was having really high fevers (105 F) which started within 2 hrs of taking the drug (at bedtime), and lasted until morning. His bloodwork also showed elevated liver enzymes. I would definitely contact your GI. I would also wonder if he's actually getting any therapeutic benefit from the drug if he's throwing (it) up within an hour of taking it. Hope he's feeling better soon!

Hi spencer1402 and :welcome:

I am sorry to hear about the issues your lad is having. :(

I agree with what already has been said hun. My concerns are:

- When is he taking the med and has his regime changed?
Imuran needs to be taken with food or at bedtime due its ability to cause nausea and irritate the stomach.

- The fact that he has been on Imuran for some time and this has developed recently you need to establish if this an issue that is drug based or Crohn's based. Does he have Crohn's? You need to contact the GI sooner rather than later.

- If he has been vomiting 1 hour after ingesting the tablet it would be best to have thiopurine metabolites done as it may be questionable that he remains within therapeutic levels.

Good luck mum and keep us posted with how you are getting on. :ghug:

I'm sorry I didn't respond but I lost the website and didn't receive a email about getting reply post.
Update- Spencer had blood work done and everything was normal except his imuran levels were very very low. I told the doc. (duh) since he's throwing it up every time he takes it. So he is now on 1.5 ml which is 75mg(double his last dose) before bed. But now he takes a 30mg prevacid before dinner and then takes zofran 4mg before he takes the imuran. He has been doing great. I think we are still in a flare. We haven't been able to get him flare free yet since he was just diagnosed a few months ago.
He seems much better now that he has been vomit free for a few weeks. I'm hoping that we can eventually ease him off of the other meds but right now I'm ok with him being on them.
