Had colonoscopy today, colon and small intestine looked normal. 2 biopsies got taken one from Ileum which the nurse said would have been taken only if it looked red and possibly inflamed. And the 2nd from the rectum area which was patchy and red and I was told i had proctitis.

Anyone else ever been told they have this, or heard of it?

I know of the causes, STI, and anal sex etc but never had or dont have either. A completely new name I have never heard of.

(was also told if i have crohns or UC it can cause proctitis)

Inflamed tissue can have many causes, do you have hemmorhoids? You may want to try baby wipes and creams, sitz baths and possibly steroid cream to heal the area.

I was dx'd with Proctitis in 2006.It's under the same IBD umbrella as colitis, crohns, etc.
It's inflammation of the rectum, the lowest part of the colon.I presented with urgency,D.,mucus and blood and Asacol suppositories and loperamide have served me well so far, with only one or two nasty flares. After my colonoscopy last month,I was told the inflammation is now higher up in the Splenic Flexure.I have an apt. with the G.I. next month.I hope all goes as well for you.

I'm glad those treatments have worked for you for the most part. It's definitely a tricky place to keep clean and dry for healing.

Keeping clean etc has never been a problem. My proctitis is located well inside the rectum,so therefore is the equivalent of keeping the colon clean ?

I wasn't aware that Proctitis could have a sexual link. In my case it's not possible.

it can have a sexual link but to be honest with you, from what i can gather, it seems to be focussed around receiving anal penetration from someone with an STD, and it also said it is highly common in homosexual men. But having crohns or UC can also cause a person to have proctitis.

Well im just awaiting biopsy results now, so im finally close to getting the definite answer, even though im yet to have my MRI

It's more common among those that have anal sex but it's not highly common. I know hundreds of gay men and only one with issues down there which is a fissure.

Yeh, I am never convinced these estimates based on what certain people are more likely to get diseases are correct. A little bit of information from this morning is slowly coming back to me re.proctitis, and I think I remember the GI saying that it is in the family of UC. Didnt mention Crohns at all. As scottsma said

It's not in the family of UC in the sense that it is a distinct disease that falls under the IBD umbrella. It's certainly an issue for many with IBD but have never heard of it being part of the crohns, colitis, indeterminate umbrella of inflamed gut diseases.

Many people with UC are first diagnosed as having UC proctitis. As the disease travels, it is then left-sided UC, pancolitis, whatever. Proctitis can be the result of many things, some chronic, some acute, and sometimes the cause is never determined.

Well spoke to Dr today to get some info on proctitis. Was told it has a few causes, main ones being anal receptive sex, resulting in passing of STD, or insertion of foreign objects (ie sex toys) causing trauma. Radiation for prostate cancer, and even bacteria like shigella and salmonella, which i was tested negative for. Other cause he said, which is also pretty common is an IBD is causing it, usually UC, but it's called proctitis due to being limited to inflammation only in rectum

Thanks Rick, I always understood mine to be IBD / UC. anyway.

But you learn something every day.

No problem. I had never heard of proctitis until yesterday during my colonoscopy. General opinion among a few forums seems to be that it's more than likely IBD/start of UC. Or just UC which has decided to stay in the rectum and not spread
