GI called in a prescription for iron (150 MG a day) DD will start it today. Anything I should be on the lookout for? Anything she needs to avoid?

Yet another pill!!! At least it is not as big as Pentasa. And thank the Lord for the Oraflo cup. I'm quite sure we would have never got her meds in her without it.

What type of iron?
Most pharmacy fill it with generic iron which is very hard on the stomach and gut.
Can cause Gi upset , diarrhea , constipation , vomiting , bleeding etc...
We got the ok from the Gi to use chelated iron which is easier on the gut
Ds just took more pills

Avoid taking magnesium or calcium supplements or calcium food close to iron pills
Take vitamin c with iron

I just started iron this week. First bottle of pills: threw up and miserable for 6 hrs with upset tummy.
Went back to store bought Slow Fe, tolerated no problem.
Watch out for severe constipation.

I've recently been put on iron. I take Feramax 150 mg/day. The nice part: it can be taken with food and it's very easy on the stomach. I've had no issues. Might be worth talking to the doctor about. (My hematologist suggested it).

I also take feramax. It's pricy (around 60 a bottle/100 compared to 6 dollars/100 for the generic, but it makes me way less nauseous so i think it's worth it.

We try to take iron on an empty stomach with orange juice. It is a frustrating supplement because it is hard on the stomach, constipating, and hard to absorb so it can do its job.
