Stem cell trial

Crohn's Disease Forum

Help Support Crohn's Disease Forum:

They have performed stem cell on 2 or 3 patients at our children's hospital for CD, but it was the one where they harvest your own cells. Dr. Burt was doing this kind but has now moved to donor cells, I believe. I know these have more scientific names but I'm on my mobile and we have a love hate relationship with multi windows and copying links.

Here is a news article about one of the case studies in Atlanta:

Seeing what my husband's niece has gone through with refractory CD, all meds have failed, steroid dependent, several resections, numerous hospitalizations and just recently a hip replacement at 29 due to steroid damage has changed my perspective on what I would consider for treatment to try to stabilize C's disease. It terrifies me to think about but I think if faced with C's disease being refractory it would be worth considering.

I agree with never say never... but I think that is a risky procedure and one I hope to never have to make for my child. I heard they did it once here in KC at Children's Mercy. The nurse (when we were admitted) said it was quite an ordeal. The Boy had tried every medicine and had had several surgeries. Even up at Mayo they told me it was risky. So hopefully in the future they will find safer ways to do it. Maybe that will be the cure?!!

I would seriously consider it if my kids had severe refractory disease, which is the type of criteria needed at this point in time.

Would the decision be hard to make? In many ways I don’t think it would because I think you reach a point where you grab with both hands anything that will take away their pain and suffering and restore their quality of life.

I imagine over time the process of transplanting will become more refined and perhaps less risky. If that does occur then it will likely become a more main stream treatment and the risks more in line with what we deal with now.

I agree, I think if necessary, we'd do anything of our kids.
I hope one day it'll be less risky and more like a cure!
