stoma rashes

I can't always figure out why my skin will break out in a bad rash around the stoma. I know if I drink a lot of orange juice then I know my skin will get irritated. But other times I just seem to get this bad skin rash no matter what I eat. My stoma is active all day long so it is hard to keep it clean and dry. I have tried Desitin ...ing when it gets really painful. And I try "airing it out" if I am alone at home . That helps some. Does anyone have anything that helps with this?

I use the cavilon spray, then the stomahesive powder. Because it has aloe in it. I have a big dent now, every since my parastomal hernia surgery, and of course that's an accident waiting to happen. So, ANY little bit of output gets in there and BANG rash and irritation. It stinks! (never mind the fact that I STILL have a parastomal hernia) But the life saver for me has been t he salts barrier rings to snuggle round Stan.

do you use any products?
before putting on the bag- i clean the skin with water, spray a light mist of skin barrier spray (by coloplast), sprinkle a dusting of protective powder where the stoma meets the skin (by convatec) and use a barrier ring that goes around the stoma before the bag.

i never had problems with rashes but i used to get a lot of itching until i started using these products, i know just use them everytime i change the bag as a precautionary.

these products were just free samples so far they've lasted me 6 months and theres still loads left.
hope you find something that works for you soon! :)

I'm sorry to say that I can't help with this much. I can tell you that I have had the same problems. I get big purple lumps around the flange. The only thing that seems to help a little is to air it out like you have done. I also used dimethicone cream. It smells like oranges and even though it doesn't make the bumps go away, it feels really good. I love your quote!

I can get cranky, impatient, and stupid when i dont feel good. But if you cant handle me at my worst.... then you dont deserve me at my best. "

I guess I am behind the times on all the different products out there. I use only the skin barrier spray. I don't know any powders or creams etc. I have had my stoma for so long I haven't looked at any new stuff. I have two big hernias..... one is underneath my stoma so the bag doesn't lay flat. I get leaks and that can get a rash going too. Thanks for your help
This quote by the way is taken from a longer quote by non other than Marilyn Monroe. I justthink she is too cool....still.

I'd say the same as what previous posters have already said. When i first had my ileostomy I had no adhesive remover... which made taking the bag of very painfull and that in itself will break and irritate the skin.. i had no powder and no barrier rings.

How often do you change your appliance? I change mine atleast every 3 days. but never leave it longer than that. I now use dansac adhesive remover (which is a spray that makes removing the bag so much easier and pain free) , I give everything a good and thourough clean with warm water and kitchen roll, and sometimes even get a bit rough and have a good scratch! it's strangely enjoyable!.. and helps remove any old bits of adhesive that may be sticking around on your skin. the dab everything dry and put on the orahesive powder. I use a barrier ring but instead of putting it round my stoma i have a weird habit of sticking it around the hole on my bag first and then sticking it on... but either way it seems to work for me. before i started using any of that i would have a good area around my stoma that would be very sore with red and broken skin, but that doesn't seem to happen anymore.

Have you checked that your bag has the correct diameter hole to fit your stoma? If it is too big, the skin around the stoma will be in contact with the output and will be irritated.

Iari, I have the stonking parastomal hernia from hell. The surgery didnt work. He's so big Heiki named him Ollie.

I found the only appliance that worked for me was the coloplast sensura flex.

What are you using again?

My own skin is irritated today. Even though rosy will be spouting in protest, Im going to shower without the bag..With an old towel at the ready after I get out..It feels so good to have warm water running down on the skin. It gets it cleaner than if you were to just sponge bathe it. I guess thats just my opinion. Everyone else is giving really good advice. You should try some other products!

Yes, Stan loves a good shower. Gets all happy. I have to have a word with him first. Sometimes he behaves, sometimes not. But a good showering makes his skin better. A bath is even better if they behave.

I trade off on appliances. If my MT. VESUVIUS stoma is being real active then I use a Hollister two piece. I keep the diameter small around the stoma. On quite days I can use a convatec one piece which fits much better over the hernia. It us easier to mold it down. This is the 3rd stoma hernia and it is as big as a grapefruit now. I have had two prior hernia surgeries but I keep getting one!! The last surgeon put all kinds of mesh in me but all that did was give me another hernia on the other side of my belly. And it is real hard. Anyway.... I am gonna check out some ostomy websites.

In the US you can get the Eakin barrier rings - look for them on ebay, and try it. Watch the video tutorial how to put it on, it takes a little getting used to. But it resolved all skin problems for me.
