Now that it has been decided that my colostomy will be permanent, my ostomy nurse is telling me I need a stoma revision. My stoma has retracted over this past year since surgery and its causing leaks and skin breakdown. I saw the surgeon and he said it is a major sugery to do the revision and no guarantees that it would be better and may turn out worse! Has anyone had a stoma revision done? Please tell me how it was - I'm a little nervous! :frown

I've had a stoma revision but I doubt it can be compared to what you are looking at. Mine was revised because I had multiple fistulae and the location also had to be changed. That being said, that last surgery was a bit more painful than the first was cause there was actually more sites to heal. Do you know if that revision can be done laparoscopically?

Hi maclavin, I haven't had a revision myself, I do however have a permanent ilieostomy. Had to have it done from the outset as my butt was, irreparable. Anyway, the above thread is about a member who has just been through one, it may help you out.

Also sending you support as this can all be overwhelming at time.

Hi back to you Jano! Thank you so much for the support and info - my butt is/was irreparable, too. We're all in this together :)

Yes, the surgeon said he would try to do it laparascopically but from previous reports he knows I have a lot of scar tissue and adhesions so couldn't guarantee it would be successful that way, unfortunately. I had 5 abdominal fistulae originating from my sigmoid colon. That was difficult as i'm sure your's were too. Thank you so much for your response.

Hi Mclavin, i don't know anything about stoma revisions sorry but just wanted to send you a hug anyway. I hope you can get it done successfully laparascopically as it makes it so much easier to recover.

So kind of you to write - means so much to me. CT on Wednesday and then f/u with surgeon. Will keep posting.

Well, if that can reassure you, my stoma revision went very well beside the skin infection (streptococcus) I got which greatly delayed my overall healing. I did not have the best condition previous to surgery but the part they removed while they did the revision was the only diseased one so I got better quickly and my new stomy works great!
