Strange bleeding due to cupcake "glitter"??

Hi, I do not have Crohn's disease, however I did have a deep fistula (with surgery) and other similar symptoms (doctor was convinced I had it) 5 years ago, but since that incident I had not had any other symptoms -- until possibly last week?

I don't even think this is a symptom but was curious if anyone has ever heard of anything like this because my wife thinks I am crazy. I also found ZERO incidents of this on google.

But I had several cupcakes with "edible glitter" (or so I am assuming it was) - you know, the little sparkly confection that some bakers add. Well about 24 hours later I had a normal bowel movement, which concluded with a good amount of bleeding. I noticed one or two tiny glitter sparkles in the paper towel.

I can't imagine that this glitter would be "sharp" enough to do this, but maybe it irritated things?? Anyway, I was pretty freaked out, but luckily it seemed to have stopped there, and that was a week ago. Any ideas, could it really be this glitter?

Well, I am queasy at the site of a speckle of blood, and from that area, any blood seems worrysome to me - but probably not THAT much, it wasn't continuous or anything, a good amount on the paper towel after first application, then quickly no more. So I know it's hard to say, but from 1-10 (10 being gushing), I'd say maybe a 2 or a 3?

fistulas can sure cause you lots of problems and that must be why you are on Humira. Have you seen good improvements since you started?

I don't think the glitter was the direct cause - it is a sugar creation. I have heard of speculation about food dyes causing bowel issues, so that may be a possibility.

Hope345: I think you are thinking of someone else? I am not on Humira?

shamrock15: Thanks for the note - I have read that the glitter is not always sugar, I figured if it was, it would have dissolved (I've been seeing glitter for several days, so none of it digested even though everything else did!).

Any way I can't imagine what else would cause that kind of irritation (maybe it was hemmorhoids as I know there are sometimes no pain), perhaps we will never know!
