I know there are a lot of students (undergrad and grad) here. How's everyone doing towards the end of the year, with finals and everything? (IBD-wise and otherwise!)

I got my diagnosis right before I started this school year, so I was really worried about getting through it. But I've almost made it, and I'm so happy!

Hey, I got diagnosed two weeks into my school year! High-five for bad timing, right?

I'm flared and frustrated but I got through finals and kept my straight-A streak going! (YAY) But now while everyone else in my program is off on vacation and having a blast I'm doing colonoscopy prep for another scope tomorrow. Sigh.

oh no, twois, that is bad timing! Sorry to hear you're flaring :-( but congrats on the straight-A streak and for getting through finals! What kind of nursing program are you in?

Good luck with the scope. That sucks, but hopefully it will lead to you feeling better soon.

It's a 16-month ABSN program, so it's... intense, to say the least. I had five classes this term (med-surg, mental health, community health, pharm, and health promotion) and had to deal with a pred taper for most of it, so... I'm pretty pleased with pulling it off. :)

Are you done with finals yet? How much longer if not?

cool, my sister is doing an ABSN program too!

I have a huge final tomorrow on the whole year, then a 3-week elective, then I'm done!

Hi deedee, I got diagnosed earlier this year too on the first week of my first year in getting my degree in Health Sciences (ironic right). And been ill on and off since then and had to defer my studeis until mid semester (this July coming). But with a bit of positive thinking and the right doctors and treatment plan I am looking forward to going back and aceing my studies and showing CD who the real boss is. Glad to hear you're doing well mate. Best of luck with studies and all and stay well - Tim :)

Oh, cool. What kind of program are you in?? I've never heard of having a final on the whole year, I've always just had semester-based classes.

Where's your sister at? I LOVE my program, it's just a loooooot of work. :)

Tim - great attitude! I'm sure you'll do great :) Is it a bachelor's program you're in? It's interesting how many of us are getting health-related degrees!

twois - I'm in med school, 3rd year. We have some small tests, and some huge tests, it really varies a lot! I don't want to post where my sister is but I'll send you a PM.

starting my financial accounting monday, taxation weds and management accounting thursday.

heavy weekend and week ahead.

Good luck bruscar!! That sounds like a lot... I remember my business major/minor friends in undergrad bemoaning financial accounting quite a lot. Anyone who can do that sort of stuff has my deepest respect!

many thanks twois,

this site is about the height of my social life for a while now, but its great to just log on and get a laugh here and there too. break away from the endless number mountain i have been skiing UP !!

Hey deedee, yeah I'm doing a bachelor of Health science hoping to move into medical research oneday. Who knows now maybe having crohns now working in research might spark in a passion in the area of research i ma choose to get involved with. That is great you're in medical school as I'm sure you're aware the human body can be a frustrating complex machine at times but you still must be learning some fascinating stuff, keep at it!
I had no idea lots of us were interesed/studying health and medical type degrees. That's really cool. Good luck with your finals - Tim :)

Hi what a good idea for a thread!
I finished my medical finals today (despite being hospitalised with a flare and bowel obstruction during them) and hopefully I've passed...... we'll see, I'm not thinking of that!

Good luck with all your exams guys!!
xxx

aw thats great stuff lulu . . . delighted for you and really hope you get what you wanted, marks wise.

thanks for the good wishes too

I just finished my first year at college 2 weeks ago in the architecture program. Not sure I would have made it through if I'd been a flare - I'm thankful I have a stoma now so that I could pursue this dream :) The only thing that was a problem was Oscar farting his brains out during exams...very mortifying...lol

Ehhh, I found out in April I had Crohn's Disease after being in so much pain since March so my grades are kinda wacked. Some of my professors have been lenient and allowed me extra time to complete assignments but others could have cared less...

Sorry to hear you've had such little support from your tutors! You should always take things to higher powers f you're being wronged! Esp with a legitimate dianosis!

Im v lucky cos my course is mostly run by doctors who understand illness, and even those who arent doctors seem to be v understanding people!

nyx - congrats on being done with the year!!

lulu - congrats on finish your exams today! What are you studying?

brie - sorry you've been having a hard time. It really sucks people aren't more understanding. I agree with lulu though, try taking it to a higher power! You should absolutely get more time to complete assignments since you have an official diagnosis. Hope you get things figured out.

Deedee, I (was) Studying medicine, if I've passed *crosses fingers, prays etc etc* I will be a doctor in a few weeks time......... :-S Let's wait and see!

How about you? xx

lulu - really? me too! I still have a ways to go until I'm a dr. though :) Congrats on being almost done, that's awesome! What do you want to go into? I have no idea!

Omg what year are you in? In fact what country are you in? I'm in the UK, oooop north!

Got my first job in a big teaching hospital, so long as Ive passed I start properly in august (gotta do some shadowing before then).

It's hard getting thru med school with a chronic disease isn't it? I had to sit my finals with a bowel obstruction - AGONY!!!

I quite like oncology or acute medicine tho, in light of the crohn's I dont think becoming a surgeon is a realistic option for me - wouldnt be ideal to have to run to the loo whilst I'm elbow deep in some poor dude's abdomen!!

If u ever need any help gimme a message Id be happy to assist, I know how tough med school is when your sick!!!

I just got done with finals last week. It was pretty rough. I just developed a fistula a few weeks prior to that, and i had a seton stitch placed recently. So I had some bumps, but I made it. I managed to get a 3.6, not my greatest, but I had some things to deal with : /

Opposite side of the world here so we are heading for the mid year break...

Sarah is in remission so has been going very well at uni, studying Politics and History (2nd year). She has a part time job as Welfare Officer and is right into student politics...and I mean big time...:eek2: I don't know how she juggles it all but she does and all is good! YAY!

Matt is in Year 12 at high school and is also doing a part time BSc majoring in Pure Mathematics. Matt was diagnosed 6 months ago, at the end of the our acadmeic year, so missed out on one of his uni exams. He also had to drop 2 of 3 uni units this semester so it was a real bummer for him. On the upside, he is on the mend now and the uni and his lecturers, plus his school, have been nothing short of fantastic in their support and accommodations for him. :thumleft:

Kudos to all you guys for achieving all you have! You never cease to amaze me...:ywow:

Dusty. :):):)

Took a break this semester, but going back over the summer to get going again.

Gotta admit, my last semester was not a good one, but I'm going to fix that (and the pain is gone now ^_^ )!

I dont think finals got me any more out of wack than normal. Last two semesters have been on the hellish side due to being in a full blown flare and caused me to drop one class each semester. Thankfully though I only need 4 more upper level classes before I can transfer to the university and start working toward my engineering degree. Yeah, taking a break over the summer to heal up and do colon prep is not my idea of fun either. Good luck to everyone.

What type of engineering degree?

I am a Engineering and Technology Education major!

I submitted my Masters Thesis this morning, 2 weeks early!!. Glad to get it out of the way, but am already looking for something to do now to replace the hours spent on it.

Just the results to come now. The wait will probably be the hardest part!

Still undecided between mechanical or electrical, but leaning toward mechanical. If I could bring myself to actually sign up for the pain of organic chem 1&2 I'd like to get a second degree in biology, but aint holding my breath on that one.

I'm revising for my first year undergrad exams, I do chemistry! I'm not too well either, think I'm in the early stages of a flare :( Going to get a doctors note though in case anything goes wrong! Well done to everyone who's doing well in uni/college! :)

Wow, great job everyone for pushing through and accomplishing so much! It's encouraging to hear so many positive responses :)

I completely agree with the O Chem. That is why I am not Pre-Med. I do not want to take those science courses. I will stick with my Robotics and Energy Systems.

I just finished my AA in Anthropology. It was a struggle this semester too. I haven't been so sick in my life and my teachers were very understanding. Thank god. I was so happy I finally finished though. I've had two babies while in school and then was diagnosed with Crohn's two weeks into my final semester. I missed a lot of classes from it as well. But guess what... I finally did it.

Now I'm prepping for the next step to finish up my BA in Education.
