When i went on vacation a couple of months ago to Florida I had a really bad reaction to the sun and i didn't even sit out in the sun for a long time. I was wondering if anyone knows whether Pentasa can cause these reactions? Has anyone had any similair experiences while on pentasa?

I know some antibiotics can cause sun sensitivity, but do not know about Pentasa.

You should be able to get a list of side effects from a Pharmacy.

From my understanding of the 5-ASA family, (pentasa, asacol, salofalk) essentially its aspirin 5 times concentrated, and extra buffered to survive the trip to the digestive system, designed to alleviate inflamation. period. I've never heard of bad reaction to sun exposure as a result, and I've been taking it for a couple of years now, and I've never had a problem (mind you, I live in Canada, so sun exposure isn't typically high on my risk factor).. However, there are numerous other drugs AND many other items
..( supplements, vitamins, anti-biotics, etc., etc..) that are known to react this way. I would re-examine all other items (including some food items) for associated risk to sun exposure... And, I would check with my GP, GI & esp my pharmasist for any info...

Hi, I've just spent a week in extremely sunny conditions on the island of Mallorca and had no problems whatsoever. I take Imuran, Pentasa, mebeverine, and an antihistamine, so think its doubtful that Pentasa is the culprit of your problem. I would check with your local chemist.

I think the 5-ASA medications must work differently on everyone.
Perhaps is has something to do with what you are taking along with it.

I became sun sensitive after going on Asacol 9 years ago.

I have read about sun sensitivity/Phototoxic reactions associated with Sulfasalazine. That medication contain 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) which is the active ingredient in in Pentasa as well as a sulfate compound called sulfapyridine. It is broken down into those two compounds in the body. Later 5-ASA drugs like Pentasa just have that compund and are better tolerated in some people including me.

Oddly, the majority of websites make no mention of possible sun sensitivity.

I ran into an odd situation with the 5-ASA drugs. I started on Asacol but hod to discontinue it because of annoying side effects like fever, dizziness and bleeding from the nether region. I have had no side effects on Pentasa even though it has the exact same active ingredient.

I must have been reacting to some component of the outer chemical coating of the Asacol since there isn't any other difference between the two medications. Odd.

I went tanning a while back and I was very sun sensitive and that was when I was on Prednisone and Imuran and Birth Control... so I wasn't sure exactly what caused mine... but I've gone tanning since and I'm not getting a rash anymore and now I'm only on Birth Control.... so I dunno
