Hi everyone, not posted for a while. Everything going fine so far with the mxt injections, inflammation levels coming down and bloods all fine, only thing was the iron so he on 2 tablets a day for 3 months. Just waiting on calprotectin results, should be any day now so fingers crossed it's much lower than last time.
Just been on a school trip which he lived and going on another end of May 😀, hoping weather is good but looking for a good suncream for him, something that doesn't sting the eyes and can be used on body and face.....don't mind what price, can anyone recommend a good one? I know it's very important to keep the kids protected especially with summer on way( hopefully) this is Scotland, lol ☔☔

We do lots of big safari style hats .
Less sunscreen around the face that way.
Baseball cap if friends are around

We have had most success with a combination approach. For the face, the "stick" type that is especially made for faces, stays put better and when you get sweaty your eyes don't sting. My favorite is Neutrogena's oil-free, because it just has a faint lemony smell, but my kids like the fruitier-smelling ones made for kids.

For the body, my kids are recalcitrant about having lotions applied. So we use the sprays. There are lots of brands. The ones that are labeled as having continuous spray are the quickest. Usually they have "Sport" as part of the title, at least in the United States. The sprays go on cold, which is refreshing on a warm day and annoying on a cool one, and if you are applying them outdoors, take note of the wind direction. For good coverage, apply thoroughly.

I hope you have a lovely, temperate Scottish summer! Here in Virginia it is a steambath already.

lbligh that's great advice about applying the stick Sun screen to the face.

Also make sure on the time limit of the Sun screen. Also, is it waterproof?

I forget what brand I had last year but I had to apply every hour during the hottest parts of the day.

I agree, the spray kind works best for my kids.
For some reason waiting for the Lotion to be applied causes irritability and fussing for my kids. :ymad:

We use sunscreen made for babies with the highest SPF. DS is too embarrassed to use it when friends are around though so then he switches to a sports lotion, baseball hat and sometimes SPF clothing. I get a little freaked out with all the chemical additives so try to find more natural types of sunscreen since, ideally, he's wearing it every day. This is the best list I've found so far:

http://www.ewg.org/2013sunscreen/best-sunscreens/best-beach-sport-sunscreens/

From that list we've used Babo Botanicals and Badger products. There is a definite difference between those and cheap sunscreens. Much thicker and a little harder to rub in.

Unfortunately, he'll only use sunscreen when I nag him. If you all have advice for getting a teen to listen, I'm all ears. I've given him all the lectures, but he only selectively listens.

Sunscreen is SO important when on these meds.

This was interesting too. The difference between US and European sunscreens:

We use a stick for the face and ears also. Spray for the body but they don't mind the lotion as long as they are doing it themselves. I keep them everywhere, car, purse, kitchen counter, bathroom so there is always some handy.
Teenage boys  they will try and leave without it but when I always have it, it's harder to get away from and they are pale like me.

We use the stick on the face and a spray, recently found a 110 ! Also invested in land send long sleeve swim shirts and some cool hats. Living in Malaysia the school has a no hat no play policy and the pool is shaded. We tend to avoid the sun at all costs, when we go home to the UK I am whiter than the locals. Nick has my Glaswegian genes and goes from white to pink to red to white, also covered in freckles. AZA has us on guard all year.
Hoping you have a great summer, I have lots of good memories of the West coast and Carridale hope to go back this summer.

I love "no hat no play"! My daughter's school doesn't allow hats at all. Really idiotic.

Mehita -- for teenage girls we made it a routine - put sunscreen on before makeup. I don't know how you could do that for boys, perhaps asking your son to put it on right before he leaves the house? We also keep sunscreen in the car, so if they're playing sports their friends don't even have to see them put it on. I got our rheumatologist to talk them about the importance of wearing sunscreen -- it seems work better if they hear it from someone other than Mom.

We also use sunscreen made for babies, we were told those provide better protection than "normal" sunscreens.

Jane and Nick, we live in Campbeltown, just a hop skip and jump from Carradale 😃what a small world it is hey. It's a lovely part of the world, you will have to keep in touch and let me know if you ever visit. Xx

Hi Dodie, I'm in "New Scotland" here, and totally relate to your weather. Sigh. My son is on MTX injections too, which makes them sun sensitive. My son has very sensitive eyes when sunscreen gets even near them. The only brand I have found that doesn't sting his eyes is Ombrelle. I think it's made by L'Oreal, but I'm not sure if it's available outside Canada. We've looked for it when we've been in the US (on our quest for low prices), but couldn't find it. Other than that, for his face I find a stick sunscreen of any brand is better than a lotion. Good luck on your hunt.

This a good all round article about sun protection and sunscreens:

When it comes to kids sunscreens I always preferred Banana Boat and Nivea but I imagine they are Australian products. The Banana Boat has one that dried dry so sand didn’t stick to it and Nivea’s goes on green and disappears as you rub it in, great for not missing areas and the kids like applying it (it is also a spray).

^^^^ I see Nivea is UK too. :)

Stick or roll on for face and ears and being in Oz you are never out of place with zinc on the nose (and a plethora of colours available), no matter where you are!

We also have the no hat, no play rule in Oz too Jane and they have to be broad brimmed or legionnaire style.

Dusty. :sun:

Glad things are going well :). On cloudy days we just use a moisturiser with an SPF of 10 or 15. When it's sunny I think we used piz bruin allergy sun lotion. Also use hats and try to stay in the shade. It's difficult t know what's too much as we really do need the vitamin D especially in sunny Scotland

We used banana boat last year too, the one that is powdery, good stuff. I tend to use 30 too as as you says ascot they need the vit d in their bodies. Xx
Good news too other day, calprotectin is a lot lower now since started the mxt.....yay 😃

That's so good to hear.
YA for drugs when they work!!!

I love banana boat brand.........Dusty, America claims that brand!:)

15 minutes a day without sun screen is all that is needed for vit d.
We use SPF 100 and DS still managed to get blisters on his skin from years of 6-mp Mtx remicade and now humira .

He also breaks out in rashes from sunscreen so its a gamble every year since what worked last year - only sometimes works the next yeAr :(

The colored zinc sunscreens look cool when it's a slash under the eyes (that area that tends to freckle or burn) but are a little scary when you put them all over someone's face. What we have done is use the transparent stick for the whole face, then add the zinc in the burn zone under the eyes.

Our only option for family sunscreens are zinc based ones as youngest DD comes out in spots with the others. The worse reactions are to the ones for sensitive skins and toddlers.

Y'all will think I'm crazy :ybatty:. But when I got badly burned years ago a fisherman in Florida told me I should be using this.

http://www.amazon.com/Blue-Lizard-A...0466484&sr=8-14&keywords=sunblock+blue+lizard

It's only spf 30 and crazy expensive compared to some but works BETTER than any other higher SPF I have put on me or on the kids. It works great on Claire - she too has broken out with sunscreen in the past.

If you see it, might be worth a try!! Has clear, micronized zinc oxide in it too according to the description. Maybe that's why it works so well????

DustyKat will say it's because it's Austrailian. :rof:

We usually find the best ones at our dermatology office or a plastic surgeon's office. They will usually let you return and try another if you don't like it. I wish we could buy it by the case, we use so much!

I've seen the Cerave at the store and almost bought some. Very interested to know what you think, MLP. I'm trying to cater to one sensitive skins/eczema kid and one gluten free kid with one lotion.

What do you all think the ingredient(s) is that causes the reactions that your kids have had? I know my IBDer can't do the Neutrogena brand for some reason. Broke out into a rash all over his face. I haven't been able to figure it out though to know what to avoid.
