I'm scheduled for laparoscopic surgery to remove my ileocecal valve terminal ileum ascending colon and deal with structuring in the transverse colon. My question should be relatively simple, when does laparoscopic not work? Meaning what examples would they have to open me? Thanks in advance.

Surgery scheduled May 24.

Hello Scaryman, I had a right hemicolectomy a couple of years ago that was meant to be performed laproscopically, however during the surgery I started to bleed a lot so they had to open me up to stem the bleeding. Hope this does not happen for u and your surgery goes well :)

I had a total proctocolectomy almost 7 weeks ago. It was done laparoscopic. My surgeon told me the reasons he would have to open were bleeding or if there were a lot of strictures. I see you have strictures, have you discussed that with your surgeon? I had 2 abdominal surgeries before this and my surgeon told me I was at a greater risk to be opened because of this. Everything went off without problem and I never had to be opened. What I read it has to do with the skill of the surgeon and how often they preform this surgery as to the rate patients have to be opened. Good Luck! Hope all goes well for you.

I had no choice but to have an open surgery due to a abdomen full of adhesions from prior surgeries. That is another reason it might not work laparoscopically. Same story with my gallbladder surgery---started laparoscopic, but was converted to open due to abdominal adhesions.

Well I have dr. Roger Hurst in the university of Chicago. He is a professor of surgery there and is VERY skilled. So we shall see.

This is going to be my first surgery, as of now I have a Virgin gut- lol.

i had a laparascopic small bowel bowel resection to remove a 12cm stricture but they found some surprises and ended up removing 80cm of continuous blockages but did not have to open me up any more than planned! I have about an inch and a half scar coming up from my belly button. be warned about laparascopic surgery- they will pump gas into you which post surgery collects in your shoulders/neck and hurts like a bitch :(

I work for a surgical insturment company and know of the co2. Just don't know how long it hurts for and how long to get out. How long did your surgery last?

I had my first operation two weeks ago. My operation lasted 3 1/2 hours with about another two hours in recovery. I had a resection, it was keyhole.

I am also scheduled for my first (virgin) surgery in about a week. My surgeon explained that they would need to open the entire gut if there were adhesions or something unexpected that would cause the intestine not to fit through the laproscopic opening. I have to say that although I am very anxious about my upcoming surgery, this site has been extremely helpful in learning what to expect. I hope that we all are in remission soon!

My surgery back in 2003 was meant to be made laproscopic. They realized that there was just more affected smaller intestine, so they opened me up. I've got my little laproscoptic scar, my big vertical across belly scar and two Crohn's unrelated scars were some bone and skin tissue was removed for my left hand. More scars on my left knee and left arm from accidents. It is what it is...

the abdominal pain was the most intense, but runner up for me was the pain in my shoulders from the gas! my surgery was 2 hr long and I was in the hospital for 6 days  but the pain button I got took care of some of it. my sister brought me a microwaveable heat bag which helped - that was my daily walking adventure- walking to the little kitchen station to warm up my heat pad and make tea :)

What did you have removed and how much if you don't mind me asking?

hey, I had one long 80cm stretch of small intestine removed from pretty high up close to my stomach (dont know what thats called?) it included a very tight 12cm stricture, followed by multiple (like 5!) tight smaller strictures seperated by distended stretched out intestine ending with a 6cm ish stretch of badly diseased inflammation. and they went in just for the 12cm stricture! I feel great now though, I had grown accustomed to carrying it all around with me because it just slowly builds up- that 80cm represented 11 years of crohns disease and multiple aggressive flareups (including 2 heavy rounds of pred). so glad to have it gone! the surgery part is a challenge for sure but in the big picture it was so worth it for me :)

Just wanted to see how your recovery is going. I had my surgery on May 20th. I was home on May 23rd, and am feeling pretty good. I am still very tired, but most of the pain has diminished and I have even had a few good poos! I have been up and walking each day, and I think it has helped tremendously. Hope you are well!

As expected surgery went very well. Thanks to the wonderful experienced staff at the university of Chicago. Only issue I had was in post op recovery. They gave me delaudid and I had respatory failure because of it. So that was interesting forme cause I had always been fine with that narcotic.
