Found out some details of my surgery....Will have to remove portion of lower colon, cecum, and area of terminal ileum. Do you know typically how long it takes to recover from this type of surgery? Understand it may require temporary bag if colon cannot be reconnected to intestine after surgery.

I had a colostomy done this past December and it took about 6 weeks to fully recover from it. I was in the hospital for 24 days, but I had other complications that contributed to that. I was only supposed to be in for 5 - 7 days.

Good luck with the surgery! I hope it gives you the relief that mine did.

I had the same surgery your are asking about in Oct of last year. I was stuffing myself with Turkey dinner by Christmas so Id say under 3 months. I did not need the temp ostomy so that might make things a bit longer since there would be some time lost to reversing it.

Feeling great these days! Better than i have in years :)

Hey Crohnie2,
During my 2 previous surgeries, I was back to work (desk job) after no more than 3 weeks at home after release from the hospital. Some people recover slower, but I just went back when I was ready.

Thats a good point CDDad. I had a special time allowance because of the physical nature of my carer. The surgeon wrote me off from work from Oct1-Jan 29 because would need to be lifting 50 lbs or more even on light duty.

Hi Cindy, How is oscar?
Did you have a proctocolectomy? I remember from one of your posts that you still have 2/3 of your colon but I was not sure about your rectum?
Best wishes

@acg...I still need to have the rest of my bits removed....my surgery was an emergency so they kept my parts in in case I wanted to have it resected....my GI is getting me a referral to a surgeon in the next few months. All of my bits from Oscar down are diseased, so I need to have them removed. Hopefully I'll have it all done by Christmas this year.

Oh...and Oscar is fantastic :)

Thanks everyone. :) I'm off the Humira now and go in to see surgeon next wk to schedule the surgery. Hoping for the best.

Surgery time need your help

Hey guys, I had few stormy days of pain bleeding as I was preparing for my colonoscopy yesterday. Apparently the possible side effects of Cimzia/Imuran is adhesion and strictures which lead to +80% blockage. The pictures looked bad enough and the GI recommendation is Proctocolectomy surgery.
I fought for 15 years to save my colon and god knows that I tried every medication out there, dealing with what we all know in terms of pain, bathroom, etc. Right now I am planning on having the surgery at Mt Sinai in nyc. Although my dieses are in the lower left side, the GI recommended that I do full Proctocolectomy?
I have tons of questions about the recovery time and post surgery pain control and would love to hear your experience.
Best
