surgery

Hi

Im new to this and was just wondering how people felt after they've had surgery?I was diagnosed in March with Crohns and have to have a small bowl resection in a couple of weeks and just dont really know what to expect from when I wake up to what it's going to be like when I get home and how long it takes to start feeling normal again, if anyone could give me any advice on any of this that would be great thanks :)

I had 10 or 11 inches of intestines removed in 2007. I was off of work for about 6 weeks and after the 6 weeks I felt pretty normal. Had a decent size incision so I had some soreness and swelling, but I would say I was back to normal (no pain, eating lots, no longer exhausted all the time) after about 4-6 months. And luckily I have had very few flareups since.
If they know where you blockage or whatever is and don't do exploratory surgery your healing time might be quicker.

Best of luck to you! Feel better!!!

Hi Sue and :welcome:

I'm glad you found your way here 'cause this is a fab place for support and info!

Have a browse through the Surgery Forum and you will find many people have posted their surgery experiences there. This is a thread about my own children's experiences...My Kids, they also had small bowel resections.

Good luck and welcome aboard!

Take care,

Hi Sue and welcome! I am sorry to hear you are facing surgery. I don't have not had surgery, so I can't offer any advice. But I do know many forum members who enjoyed YEARS of remission after surgery. I sure hope you will, too.

Crossing my fingers your surgery goes well, you have a speedy recovery, and you feel terrific in no time! Good luck, Sue!

In my opinion theres two major things that contribute to your comfort after surgery. The first one is the method they used for the surgery. Ideally you want it to be done laproscopically because its a smaller incision, less pain and faster recovery. Ask for this to be done..it cant always be done but a good surgeon will be trained to do it.

The second thing is you should ask for a PCA pump, which is just a pain control pump with a button you control for pain. Its much better then having 1 dose every 4-6 hours or whatever, and having to page the nurse all the time and being in pain while you wait for them. You can push it like once every few minutes and its much more effective and will significantly add to your comfort.

Make sure you talk to your doctor about both these things before you have your surgery.
