I was just curious if anyones CD symptoms get worse while they are on there period. I have been getting really bad pains and bloating a lot worse than I have been, and I was wondering if having my period would cause anything? Or if it is because I went off of my prednisone, and now I am currently getting back on it. Just want some opinions! Thanks!

Hey, Marissa!

This is pretty common, actually. A lot of us do experience a worsening of symptoms with our periods.

 I hope you feel better soon!

Hello Marissa
I too find that my Crohns is much worse during my period and I am also premenopausal. The more research I do, the more I think that CD is linked to hormones.
Hang in there and take care.

YES!!!! I do for sure. Docs say not possible, but my calendar says yes it is. I take primrose oil before and during my period and it has helped! Birth control can help too, but I have read some hype that it is bad for the gut flora. Just can't win. Grrrr

I have HORRIBLE cramps for the first 3 days of my period (used to be for a full 7 days so it's less days now but pain is way more intense now) and If I can't keep the pain under control it aggravates my crohn's big time. It gives me diarrhea not matter what though. I've had bad periods since a teenager. I know it helps a lot of people but birth control pills have never helped me. I did take the depo-prevera (sp?) shot for a time which completely stopped my periods :) but probably had other effects that weren't good. Have seriously thought about checking into it again because my pain is so bad and what it does to my crohn's.

Depo-Provera can actually increase your risk of osteoporosis if used for more than two years. Since we're already at a slightly greater risk due to nutrient absorption issues, I'd be cautious with it. Considering how painful your cycle is, though, it might be worth it. I'd suggest you talk it over with your GYN. :)

I hope you can find something to help!

That's what I was thinking the problem was with it. Thanks. :) not sure it's worth it at this point.

I just read that being deficient in magnesium can cause painful menstrual cramps. I have started taking a highly absorbable magnesium supplement since my last period. Let's hope for improvement this next time around :) Will let you know if it seems to help over the next few months. Not sure it would help any with my crohn's acting up during my period though...

I swear by Mefenamic Acid. I take it as soon as I realise my period is looming (usually after about two days of my guts going nuts and me wondering why and me crying a lot, lol). It really helps. I would say it gets rid of all my pain and I feel better than I do normally!!

I don't know how it works but it sure does.

And yes, crohns does make our periods worse, I don't care what doctors say.

My symptoms always get worse right before. It's actually one of the main things that pointed to Crohn's for my doctor before diagnosis.

YES! My symptoms are much worse during my period. I have been on LoEsterin 24 Fe for about 7 years now, and I do have to say birth control helped me. I worked out a plan with my gynecologist to help. Technically this pill (I am on the generic version now, Gildess) is supposed to have 21 days of hormones, and 7 days of placebo pills. I told her I absolutely cannot have my period for an entire week. I would never be able to make it through work. So she told me I was able to go for (up to) 3 months with taking my pack's straight through and skipping my placebo pills. Then, when I do get my period, I only have to have it for 3 days (or however long I want) then I can start my new pack. It has helped me so much. The only issue with that is worrying about if you are pregnant or not if you are having sex. But if you are looking for some relief this may be a way!
