Here are my Stool Calprotectin and Lactoferrin results. Would this not indicate IBS?

1. Calprotectin, Fecal is 46. The normal is <16 - 50 ug/g. (It seems it's on the high end of normal.)
2. Lactoferrin is 20.57 High. The normal is 0.00 - 7.24 ug/ml.

Thank you.

HI Caeryn, just wanted to let you know we haven't forgotten you, , I have no idea about the numbers, we here in Canada dont get those numbers unless you ask. Also very hard to get a full diagnosis for some. Took me over a year of almost weekly tests. :hang: there are some here who can help you!

Calprotection is within normal ranges, this would indicate IBS rather than IBD.

However, your raised lactoferrin is high, which may indicate IBD rather than IBS or it could indicate a pathogen (bacteria, virus, fungus).

Neither test is 100% accurate, and neither test is actually 'licenced' as a diagnostic test. Although studies have been done into whether these tests can discriminate between known cases of IBS and IBD, I don't think they have been studied as diagnostic tests yet.

So looks like its more tests needed to find the problem!

Thank you for responding.

I had some other recent tests. My CT scan showed "thickening of the distal descending colon and the proximal sigmoid colon." It said the thickening "can be seen with infectious/inflammatory process."

My WBC was high. Some other blood tests were off also. They did not run any "specialized" blood tests. They tested my stool for some infections. Those were negative.

All your tests taken together could point to either inflammation or infection. Your stool has been tested for some infections, that makes it less likely. So that leaves inflammation. There are different types of inflammation- the IBD kind is one, but also you can be left inflamed after an infection. The best way to tell the difference is by looking at it and biopsying it.

maybe it's time for a scope, and if your current doc won't do it maybe you need to find one that will.

I have appointment with the Hospital's GI clinic in 2 weeks. They didn't help me in the past. They kept saying it's IBS/in my head. They wouldn't order any more tests either. Maybe this time they will take me seriously.

If they don't do anything, there's another GI clinic I can go to. It's at another hospital.
