So i havent really been eating much for the last 2 days but im so hungry however my appetite it just really poor right now and when im thinking about food im feeling physically sick. What foods do you guys eat when ur feeling unwell? comments would be appreciated

Generally if I am in pain I'm not hungry so I have soup, jelly, slimfast or ensure, bananas, rusks (baby biscuits), fruit juice. Basically anything soft (or liquid) and bland. If you're feeling hungry, maybe try mashed potatoes, plain chicken and eggs as well?

I agree - I always go with soup (you can put crackers in it and let them get soft), instant mashed potatos, white toast and scrambled eggs. Kraft Dinner works for me too, but that could just be me.

im just managing some jam on toast i just cant afford to loose any more weight but am not able to keep anything in me, it sucks!!

Although they can be expensive, meal replacements can be very helpful during these times. Boost, Ensure, (not sure of some of the names of others), anything that has high calorie and high nutrition counts in them are very helpful and fairly easy on the gut.

If you go this route, I would recommend only buying one or two at first to see if you like them and/or can tolerate them. Some of them have high sugar counts, which is great for calories, but can be hard on the gut.

Experiment with different flavors (personally, the strawberry ones make me gag as they remind me of barium!).

The other thing with meal supplement drinks is, because they are (what my brother calls) "pre-digested"... there is very little residue to come out in stool as your body absorbs almost all of the drink.

Hope this helps.

Hi silvermoon, i am under a dietician and am on nutrition drinks called fortisip and they are nice and help when i really dont want to eat, am also on something called pro cal shot which isnt nice, i just find i am not really wanting to eat or drink anything my belly just feels like im bloated alot and i just feel sick at any thought of food

Good to hear re: dietitian.

Not so good to hear re: bloating and nausea...lol. Can you try anything like Gas-X? It may not help.

And I can sympathize with how you feel for sure. Sometimes walking can help too. I realize it may feel like the absolute last thing you want to do right now, but sometimes it is the best thing to get things moving. Although, if I were to choose to do this, maybe just walk back and forth in front of your house, so if something feels like moving, you are not too far from the toilet!! lol

I've felt fortunate, because I've been able to eat cheese without any noticeable difference in my flare. It's opened a lot more up in my diet, because so many things have cheese in them.

When I couldn't eat, I would drink ensure, eat jello, yogurt. Peppermint decaf tea is relaxing sometimes, but good for my gut. I wouldnt be hungry but those things wouldn't be tough to force down. Gotta keep calories coming in.

I can't gain weight, I've only be able to maintain weight.

I know this is long, and I'm sorry, but sometimes is takes a little to explain.
I've been in the hospital 3 times since April 7th for a total of 24 inpatient days. The first 2 times, my doctor kept me for 5 days, ran tests, switched me from IV fluids to soft solids in 48 hours and sent me home. I didn't trust my GI when I got my 3rd attack in less than a month and no one could reach him. So I changed doctors. New doctor said my Crohn's was extremely active in 2 places and a fistula and formed at some point, but appeared closed with scar tissue. He said my colon needed a break and put me on liquids for a while. It's been almost a month and I'm still afraid to eat too much. I've been drinking Ensures, eating yogurts, and recently went to a mix of baby food with mashed potato, then soft-cooked pasta mixed with soft cooked chicken breast. The other problem I'm having is I went into this flare 30 pounds over weight. During the IV treatments, I lost 10 pounds but then I started gaining weight. I was drinking too many Ensures and eating too many yogurts compared to my activity, especially when I started adding the soft foods. I'm trying to balance everything out and it is so difficult.
Mollybean, my experience is if you are trying to gain weight when you don't want to eat, drinking Ensures can help. Personally, I like the chocolate and vanilla. Also everydayhealth.com offers a food journal that is awesome. I have found it very user friendly and it does automatic calorie calculations for both losing or gaining weight. It's very easy and useful for calculating calories and maintaining a food journal, which I am very bad at. Porter89 and Silvermoon, sounds like you guys know what your talking about. Although you don't feel like it, you need to drink/eat something unless you want IV fluids. And then walk it off. I know how hard this is, but it does help. Drinking ensures, eating yogurt, and walking around the nurses station helped me off IV's and get out of the hospital. I came home and drank ensures, ate yogurt and walked up and down the hallway. But as least I'm home! Now it's just slowly advancing the diet. It helps to know there are others out there going through the same thing and that I'm not alone. I know we are all different and what works for me may not work for you, but I hope someone gets somthing useful out of my ramblings.

Hi missb,

I think there are people on this forum that will get alot from your post so thank you for posting, its just so annoying with something like this what to eat what not to eat, i no im not good to eat cheese is a big no no so my dietician suggested spreadable low fat cheese, which has been okay up until today eaten 4 crackers and this god damn cheese and i am in so much pain from it. Its like its okay one day and then the next its not. With this u just dont no what u can eat and whether or not your going to play with fire one day that can cause blockages etc i think there should be more research into the diet factor of these type of diseases

Wow, I should probably read before I post. I just posted something about being hungry and nauseous at the same time. I guess I can try to eat some of these things you guys have mentioned. I bought some Boost type drinks, but now I have to fight my daughter for them. LOL. Thanks for the tips everyone!

Hi Psilant: I bet most of us have done that! Glad you've found some useful tips; let us know how they work for you.

I live on PB and whey protein. Baked potatoes too. I should take vitamins but don't think I would absorb them, besides I hate pills. The Gummi ones are good though.

I recently bought Boost High Protien drink. I complained to my doc that everyday at around 2:30pm (I eat lunch at noon) I get so tired that I want to crawl under my desk and go to sleep. She suggested adding more protein to my lunch to balance out the sugar drop, so I tried to add more meat, etc. protein food and that didn't work. I have used the Boost for 2 days now and I'm awake at 2:30 PM because I'm in the restroom w/D. Has anyone tried this and had the same problem? Psilant I see you said you bought some. Have you tried it and did you have any problems.

Lucy, are boost drinks like ensure and fortisip high calorie protien drinks like vitamin minerals added in as i am getting alot of diareah if i take over 2 at the moment and im not sure why that is either

I think you're in a flare, try calling your GI and give him a heads up on your symptoms, maybe he can adjust your medication to give you some relief.

I usually eat yogurt, ensure, homemade chicken soup (with veggies strained out), and I juice pinapples (ducks) I know it makes diarrhea worse for some people but it helps me. I also eat ramen noodles, cheese and crackers, and drink broth. I always eat VERY slowly and in tiny amounts at a time to trick my tummy into keeping it in (works pretty well). It's a trick I learned from a friend who had colon cancer. I miss her.:yfrown:

hi mountaingem,

can you eat cheese and what types of food can you not eat, i can not tolertate cheese at all the only cheese i can eat is the low fat spreadable and even now i am still going to the toliet with that right now, also finding citrus fruits hard, also homemade rice pudding and some very creamy yoghurts.

I understand, I've had flare-ups where I can't tolerate anything creamy. The only cheese I can tolerate is really good quality cheddar-like Tillamook brand, and it's got to be sharp. I also eat Jarlsburg light. If dairy is making you sick, then definitely avoid them, or try soy cheeses. You can make whey protein shakes with soy milk, too.

I can't have citrus either, only pineapple (is that a citrus?), and it's got to be fresh; if it's store bought it goes straight through, I think it's the added sugar.

I made a Big mistake today. After weeks of being so careful, I fixed pancakes for my nieces this morning. I'm thinking light, fluffy, easy going, WRONG! I spent several hours this afternoon curled in a ball and then sort of just passed out when the pain pill kicked in. I'm still crampy which is why I'm up at 1:30 a.m. when I have to get up at 7:30 to take my new dog in to get neutered. I've had nothing but Ensures and yogurts the rest of the day and no more pancakes! However, my sister had to ask was it the pancakes or the syrup. For someone trying to be so careful, I can be so stupid sometimes.

Oh Beverly, I feel sick just reading about your difficult day. That wasn't one bit stupid -- how could you guess that some flour and milk could go so wrong? I hope you are able to get some relief from the pain soon.

Thanks Kelly. And I didn't even use milk to mix the pancakes, I used water. Must be something in the batter. Bottom line...no more pancakes for me. Thank God I'm feeling better this morning except for my hip. My doctor told me the other day that my reaction to the Prednisone is a little extreme with the joint and tendon pains, swelling, etc.... I had my ensure and yogurt for breakafast and just taking it easy today. I asked my nieces if they wanted pancakes this morning and they yelled 'NO'. LOL

(Thinking out loud) Have you ever been checked for Celiac disease Beverly? Maybe that would be worth checking, people with Crohn's are more prone to it according to my doc.

I made a mistake today too- had a cheese omelet which is normally ok, but I had a bad night last night, and probably should have taken it easy foodwise! Glad to hear you're feeling better now Beverly. Hows your dog doing?

@ Jeannette - Never heard of Celiac disease. I'll check into to it. Thanks for the tip @ Rebecca - omelets, pancakes, people just don't understand how something so simple can cause so much trouble. As for my dog, he got neutered yesterday and now I'm having to keep him restrained, which is proving very difficult. We are doing extremely well on the housebraking. We've only had 1 accident in 2 days. I'm totally amazed. He is such a great dog. I'm glad he found me.

So glad things have improved, Bev. Hope it isn't celiac, though (you have enough to deal with!). Jeannette, I had no idea with people with Crohn's are more prone to celiac! Good grief, so much learn.
