Hi all,

(Im reposting this on the general forum because I got no response in Treatment and really would like some support).

I come to you very disappointed this morning. After trying some different kinds of medications (entocort, pentasa, lialda), I was finally put on Prednisone 40mg a day. I started feeling great almost right away. This lasted for about a week with no problems at all. I was so excited!

However, all of last night and this morning I've been running to the bathroom with bad D and gut pain.

Is it normal for the Pred to stop working for a day? Is m body fighting it off? Do I still have hope or is this going to be another lost cause? Its getting frustrating and I kind of feel embarrassed to keep telling my doctor that none of this stuff is working for me.

Any help or advice is appreciated. Thanks.

it could just be coincidence, might have been something you ate or a wee bug,i was on preds for a while and they took about a week or 2 to kick in but if i ate something that didnt agree then i would pay the piper steriods or not....

I can't offer too much advice, but I know that prednisone acts REALLY fast, from everything I've read, so it makes sense that you felt better almost immediately. Not sure about it wearing off quickly or whether people have "off days" while on it. That said, I definitely have had many off days while on my current meds (Pentasa and budesonide, similar to what you were on); I keep a food and symptom diary, and although I can't always narrow it down, it sometimes helps to give me an idea (or at least an informed guess) about whether or not I ate something specific that made me not feel well. I'd suggest you do the same if you feel like it would help!

Perhaps most importantly, however: do NOT feel "embarrassed" about telling your doctor if a medication is not working for you! Part of their job is to make you feel better, and a LOT of Crohn's patients (myself included) take time to figure out what actually works for them in terms of treatment. You're not doing anything wrong by keeping your doctor informed!

Have you noticed any change in what you were eating as you started to feel better? I know that in the past when I am having a flare I don't really want to eat much and then I get the pred and start to feel so much better that I go into overdrive with food, I have learnt the hard way that I still have to take it easy for a while until all the inflammation is gone and the tum is more settled.

If it continues though get back onto your doc and don't feel embarrassed, you can't help it that this is happening hun.

hi how much are you taking you might need it increased i have been on it for 15 years on and off but if i go below 15 mg my crhon's starts god luck

Hi everyone,

Thank you so much for the help and support. I did eat something a little different the day before the flare up. If you eat something that causes a flare how long can the flare generally last? Im new to this so Im still unsure if its from that or if the meds aren't working.

Right now I am on Budesonide (3, 3MG tabs in the morning), Pentasa ( 2, 500 MG tabs 3 times a day) and Prednisone (1, 20 mg tab once a day). Ive been on the Budesonie and Pentasa for maybe 2 months now and they helped a bit but not enough. My doc tried Lialda which actually made me worse. Now Ive been on the prednisone for about 1-2 weeks and at first it worked great but like I said Ive been having this flare for a second straight day now. Can food cause a flare to last a few days?

Thanks!
