Hi :)
I have been suffering with severe lower back pain along with usual stomach pains and was just wondering if anybody had any tips for sleeping?
I can only lie on my left side as this seems to dull the pain. I want to try other methods before going on more medication. Iv heard of some people using different kinds of pillows.
Any advice would be great :sign0085:

Hi Ness. Good to see you here on the forum, but sorry it's because you are unwell. When I was flaring badly, I had really debilitating lower back pain too. I found the best way to alleviate it was with a hot water bottle. I'm guessing a heating pad might do the trick too.

Heating pads definitely help. I also found laying on my left side helped me. I also use a memory foam pillow for my knees, and have been considering a body pillow.

Otherwise, I sometimes take sleeping medication, but only on occasions. I have restless leg syndrome so that helps them stop moving. :p

Thanks for replying :)
Is there a reason for the back pain as i have seen a lot of people suffer with back pain?
I already use a hot water bottle but will look into getting heating pads :)
I was given amitriptyline but stopped taking so maybe i should start taking it again.

Poor fiance is getting grumped at all the time due to me being exhausted

I'm not entirely sure! I know I suffered a fair bit of back pain when I was first dealing with my fistula, because I would favor one side (my left) to lay on, which got pretty stiff and sore after awhile. But I also wasn't moving very much, then.

The amitriptyline might be a good idea. Apparently antidepressants also can help with sleep sometimes!

And aw! I hope they understand why, though. :p

I like a cup of camomile or peppermint tea for the tummy. I usually soak in a nice hot bath, then lay with a heating pad under my back that will shut off itself once in bed. I am almost always sound asleep within half an hour of lying down.

Also doing certain yoga poses or light stretching give me relief - child's pose, cat pose, bending over gently and hanging with head and arms down while standing and lightly swaying

Hope that helps :)

spondioarthritis

I seen my GP today and he basically said all my problems are due to heartburn/indigestion.
Only thing i don't understand is that i get lower back pain without having indigestion. Anyway i have been told to double my omeprazole dose. He also does not want to go anyway near my pentasa so basically have to wait to see my IBD nurse as he does not know.
Feeling a bit annoyed and clueless.

I wouldn't go to a GP about GI problems. My GP also told me my stomach problems were just stress when really they were from Crohn's before I was diagnosed. Go to your GI and you'll probably get a better answer.

Yes, it seems to be very common amongst IBD sufferers. I guess when things are inflamed and swollen, back pain could be caused by pressure. Or referred pain? I know some of mine was related to bladder issues caused by a fistula. It has almost totally gone since I had the surgery. Only resurfaces if I've overdone it and am very tired.

The only problem is where i live there is not any GI's. I have to travel hundreds of miles and wait months for appointments. However i was given a number to phone so i might try that and see where it gets me :). Thanks. It definitely feels like pressure on my back.

Just phoned the number and its a number that gets directly into contact with my GI. Cant believe how relieved i am to know its his number. He will never get rid of me now lol!
