To treat or to push through?

I was curious whether you guys and gals (everyone is different I'm sure) 'prefer' (<< I use this term very lightly) to treat your disease until it is well under control, and then get into life (work, school, relationships, whatever it may be), or do you remain with daily pains or other chronic symptoms and just push through your daily life? I've never been able to handle the latter for more than a couple months until ending up in the hospital, but I also have never attained the former, being remission, so I'm basically never doing anything (Significant, at least.. part-time school is about all I can handle, along with social adventures here and there which sometimes result in a few bad days following said activities).. I aways love hearing from all of you!

Hiya Crohnadian (ace name)

I won't be a martyr to this pain! I'll eat any drug!
So I blitz any inflammation as soon as, either with Pred or Entocort, cos I can't go to work in pain with the runs, just not practical.
Having said that, I've only really had one major huge flare up (meaning, hospital, drug intervention) and any niggly pains i have get knocked on the head with codeine phosphate and paracetamol.
I have a life, I have Crohn's, but the bitch hasn't got me!
stay well xxx

HI there, well my life is surely not all about the disease, you have to have a life, you can't let crohn's get to you. if you want to know, i have had crohn's for 21 years and been in remission for 15 years but, recently flared up i am on preds and meds now to calm down the inflammation. You can have life after crohn's. Just eat what foods agree with you and stay away from the foods that you can't. i eat about 4 to 5 small foods daily. i stay away from anything that is fibre like whole wheat , oats, and other groups of food with fibre. i eat probotic yogurts, soups if i can handle them. i stay away from diary groups. i boil all my food even red meats , but rarely do i eat red meats and pork. i boil my poultry even chicken breasts. Basically stay away from anything that don't agree with you. but, in saying that everbody is different it's all trial and error. i don't let crohn's control me i control it by what ever means possible. When i have a down day i rest as much as possible. and eat a little less food i stick to fluids myself that is for short period of time. anyway all the best.

I was diagnosed after being with my boyfriend for only 8 months. He's stuck by here, and I owe a lot to him. I tell everyone what he tells me, "Don't let your disease live your life," and "Live your life, don't live your disease." He's the one that pushes me to get the treatment I need, keep the pain in check, and eat what I have to. He keeps things alive in me, and helps keep me up and going.

I had a year left of grad school for my Master's, which I had to commute 45 mins each way for... 3 days a week after a full time job. Classmates would brag about having a 4.0GPA, and I was happy with keeping mine above a 3.5 or 3.0 depending on the term. Since then, I've kept my fulltime job. But it's kept me from studying and taking a CPA exam. I have 3 girlfriends that I make myself stay in touch with and continue to see and travel for. They help keep me together, so I do the same for them.

Everyone has things they can do and things they can't. It's about finding your strengths and making them work for you and your life.

I'm still not diagnosed with anything specific other than IBD, fibro (and other non-related issues) at this point so I spend a lot of time just trying to slog through it. I have this stuff that coats my stomach called carafate, which so far seems to help the stomach trouble, but when I get a massive migraine or terrible pains like I have now, I can't take my painkillers or anything else for that matter :( The carafate will keep them from being absorbed.

I think there's always going to be a little of both whether you are in remission or still trying to get there. My mil has trouble even when she is in remission.

I push through what can be pushed through but accept defeat when needed. I haven't always been in remission but some symptoms I have pushed through such as fatigue, diarrhea, pain etc. It any of these are too debilitating then of course I don't force myself to deal but for a while those things were a part of my life and I accepted them as such.

Treat, treat , treat. You need something to help you control what's eating your intestines inside. Otherwise those inflamed bits will get scarred and you'll end up going under the knife again...

I treat the disease, and while I am flaring I try to push through, but I know my limits. Right now I've been flaring since October, and I have yet to find the "magical combination" to get me back into remission. So I am currently on short term disability. However, I worked until my hospitalization last April, then went back to work, and am now out again. I won't go back at this point until I can get it under control.

I guess I must have read it wrong. Of course you treat the symptoms. You just ride out the symptoms as they're being treated of course.
