I just experienced my worst flare to date, and first hospitalization (2 weeks). After nearly 2 months, I'm finally beginning to feel like I'm getting back to normal. I've been on a "low fat low residue" diet this whole time and I'm wondering if anyone else has been in this situation, and if you have any recommendations for how/when to transition off of this diet.

Also, any specific food recommendations to start with would be greatly appreciated. Prior to my flare I primarily ate a low-carb diet, so I'm not really sure what to go to because I'm assuming I shouldn't eat as much fiber yet as I was before.

Thanks for any help :)

I was also in the hospital for the 1st time back in June. However, I was only in there for 4 days. I managed to take care of myself a bit with natural remedies so I didn't have to stay long (prob the fact that I didn't have insurance helped boot me out too, lol). Anyway, I'm not sure what you're eating but I know a veggie broth chicken noodle soup rescued me. It's something my husband came up with. We use Pacific sun organic veggie broth (low sodium), chicken, peas, green beans, carrots, onions, and celery and finely chopped up and boiled to death in the broth. I'm gluten free so I use rice elbow noodles added to the soup when I heated it back up. I basically eat low carb too. I'm a big veg head so eating this way was difficult. I also would eat chicken with tumeric and lemon, rice protein drinks, tuna, talapia (sp?), bananas, applesauce. One thing for sure is that we all tolerate foods differently so take it slow and try one thing at a time. Best of luck to you, hope that was of some help.

One idea might be to run a slow elimination diet. Since the foods you are eating now are working, keep most of them contant in the begininng. Add a new food every 2 days. If it agrees, keep it. If it doesn't, then make note of that foods make up. Was it high is sugar? Was it spicey? High in starch? Was it a low glycemic food, or high glycemic food? Too much insoluble fats will also give most people problems. Gluten? High fiber? Just make notes, and go back to what you know is safe until you're ok again. After awhile, start trying to find any constants in the break down of foods that you find do bother you. Don't eat any foods that may have those same characteristics. This is a hard effort. However, if you do it, you will find it is well worth it.
