Anyone travel there before. If so how did your IBD behave? Did you take the Dukoral oral vaccine before going? Did the vaccine make you sick?

I am going for the first week of December and now I am starting to get nervous.

Hi Lydia, Been to Riviera Maya 3 times. Had to have Hep B I think & Tetanus. If your going to a big hotel in that region then the food is of a huge variety & the cleanliness is fantastic.
No real probs to report

Thats where we are going! Thanks, I am a little less nervous now. We are staying at the Blue Bay Esmeralda.

Sounds great & Playa Del Carmen is a great place & very safe. Lovely atmosphere down the main drag (5th Avenue), lots of bars & shops & music aplenty.
In the past we've stayed @ Barcelo Maya Beach Resort, Sandos Caracol Beach Resort & Spa & the Rui Tequila @ Playacar(gated community of hotels within walking distance of Playa Del Carmen. All excellent Hotels with great beaches, great food & lots of entertainment.
We visited Xcaret, Tulum, Coba, Swimming with Dolphins in Cancun aquarium, there is plenty to see & do!
If it has any lagoons make sure you take mossie repellant though.
Have a great time

Yes we plan to bring bug repellent and sunscreen, and immodium, pepto bismol, gravol, tylenol, and anything else we may need. lol. Luck favors the prepared right?!

i just book a trip to panama and was wonder this my self. you might want to ask your doc for a rx for a cipro to have on hand that just incase.

You may want to consider hiring medical insurance for your trip. Assist Card or something like that, it is not that expensive. I don't think you will use it but it will make you feel safer.

You will love Playa del Carmen I’ve been there once. :)

Yep, we have insurance from my hubby's job that covers travel. They will even pay to fly me home in the event I get really ill. So thats awesome.

I have another question. What did you eat? I know they say to stay away from salad, and make sure food is piping hot, but what did you eat. Is the food all spicy, beany, and corny, like mexican food, or is there other food too?

Lydia, the 3 times I've been there has been so much choice its untrue. I'm not a spicy food lover anyhow but still had no problems. If I was nitpicking I'd say that lunch is repetitive, burgers, hdogs etc. But the local fish is delicious & after I got bored with burgers I used to have a lot of it.
I'm sure you'll be fine.

I'm considering going to Mexico City in April for a conference.....my cousin lives there (somewhere!) ....so might be able to combine business with pleasure.....

One thing I need to do is re-up my passport! I know it is around here somewhere.....

if your in a resort ask them, but they usually have there own water supply other wise the rule is if you can't peal, boil, or cook don't eat it. doesn't need to be piping hot just cooked is usually safe also spice kills things so if your stomach can handle spiciness if your nervous. also eat at places that are busy with locals they are usually safer. deep fired can also be dangrous (i don't know why just on trips i've been on that always been a culprate) but panfried is totally safe.
