As most of you know.. i've got kidney issues possibly and this week i've got to have an ultrasound scan on my kidneys.

I had one last year for my bladder and it was horrible.

I have a fear of being touched (great, i get this fear, then i get ibd!!) so it's going to be horrible and i'm in pain too.. so it's gonna suck.

Any ways to make it more comfortable? I always get told off for tensing, but it's not nice!

For your kidneys, they will want to do the scan more round your back and higher up than for your bladder, maybe that won't feel as bad for you?

I would take something like a book in with you, or maybe an iPod set to speaker mode (so you can hear the ultrasound guy's instructions), something to distract you a bit. The more you focus on how horrible it's going to be, the more tense you will be and it's a vicious circle!

You could even try something (with your doctor's agreement of course!) like Rescue Remedy or an essential oil like lavender, they are very relaxing.

Ah yes! I love Rescue Remedy! I'll get some of that!

It's not just how it feels.. it's the thought - someone is touching me. You don't touch me unless you have my concent basically or you're hurting me and won't stop - silly doctors doing their job :(

My mum will be there so i'll get her to talk to me. Thanks!

In that case you need to give your consent to the doctors, maybe ask them to explain to you exactly what they are going to do, with the agreement that you can ask them to stop at any time. Once you know you can stop them, hopefully you won't need to. Like when I had my brain MRI they gave me a buzzer to hold, and if I pressed it they would stop and pull me out. Every time I felt nervous, I just reminded myself that I was in control and could stop proceedings, but I chose not to.

Kind of like reverse psychology technique. I'll talk to my doctor beforehand about that. Sounds more relaxing to be honest.

At school, my fear was so bad I couldn't sit in the middle of a school hall in assembly. I had to sit at the back by the door. That way I had control to get out if I needed to but didn't have to because I was in charge! Haha.

And if I'm not wrong Tasha, the kidney scan, as opposed to the bladder one, I think they won't require you to not urinate to do it. So at the least it should be a bit more comfortable for you? Did they mention you that you had to drink plenty and hold it or ?

I have no idea what I am supposed to do. The doctor referred me, and I am awaiting a letter through the post which will say and we've not had it yet.

Update - I had my scan today. All my organs are perfectly healthy. That is good news that i'm healthy, bad news that i'm in pain and they don't know why. The lovely doctor said that the scan doesn't look at my bowels or anything linked to that. She can only see my kidneys, pancreas, liver, lungs, urinary track etc. So atleast my kidneys are good! I am seeing a specialist next week for my stomach/intestines/bowel problems. So, we shall see from there. :)
