Hi.
I have a now 7 year old daughter who has been suffering with ongoing stomach complaints since around the age of 2.5. My instincts are telling me it's Crohn's but most of her tests are not. She had endoscope & colonoscopy October last year that showed inflammation in her small & large intestine which is the only test that has shown anything. They said it was not chronic & decided to treat her with 2 lots of antibiotics to heal the inflammation & hence stop the symptoms. This did not happen she was worse on the antibiotics & showed no improvement once they were finished.
For many years her main symptoms were pains, nausea & cramps but no other evidence of possible IBD except the result of the scopes. Her symptoms are so bad though that it interferes with her schooling & every day life. Her symptoms seem to be completely unrelated to food & we have tried every diet known to man with no success.
They have finally referred her to a pain management clinic & they are re-scoping her in September but they are suggesting her inflammation was acute & has probably cleared up now & she is suffering chronic pain. I feel differently & will be very interested to see what the scopes in September reveal. She has recently started to have some bleeding although very minimal but some vaginal as well as bowel & also mucus in her stools (sorry for the details). The only other thing that shows up with ultrasound is that her lymph nodes are always enlarged which they keep telling me is normal for kids.
I am just wondering if there is anyone else out there with a similar story that ended up with a diagnosis of Crohn's & if so if you have had success with the relief of symptoms? I am passed the point of not wanting it to be I just want a name for her suffering so we can fight it.
Thanks for listening. I look forward to hearing from you all :ghug:

Welcome to the forum Searching.

What blood tests have you had done? Are you keeping a food diary?

Sorry your DD to feeling unwell.

Welcome to the forum, but I'm sorry to hear of all your daughter has been through. My 9 yo son was dx'd last yr, but his case was different than your daughter's. He became ill quite suddenly, and thankfully had a quick dx. Her symptoms are definitely worrisome, especially the vaginal bleeding, IMO. I know there are many on this forum who went on a long time trying to get answers, so hang in there. Maybe these new scopes will bring about a dx and you can get her on the road to feeing well. And don't worry about giving graphic details here!!

Hi Catherine,
Thanks for the welcome. She has had many bloods done I'm not sure I could tell you exactly what they were but her inflammatory markers & all her levels I am told are normal. Do you have a suggestion to request something specific? We have kept a food diary in the past but can never pinpoint an increase or decrease in symptoms with certain foods. The problem is though that she has some level of discomfort all the time which makes it hard to recognise if something is irritating her. I feel if we can get her diagnosed & treated it then may be easier to see if a particular diet will help.

Does she have mouth or genital ulcers?
Sometimes the ulcers can cause vaginal bleeding
Since that is associated with bechets ( mimics crohn's )..
Causes abdominal pain as well as many other things...

If it is crohn's ask for a pill cam during the next scope - they can place it during the scope so they can see the entire small bowel.

Also get a referral to Rheumo
They seem to handle gray areas better
Good luck

Thanks my little penguin,
I'm not aware of any ulcers but I'll read up on it thank you I've never heard of it.
I will ask about the pill cam. Do you mean a Rheumatologist?

a pill camera is not commom test in Australian and very expensive.

Have you had faecal calprotectin done? This test is not covered by medicare prices do vary between labs.

will reply more late i'm on my phone.

Yes I meant a Rheumotologist .
They handle vascular diseases and a whole slew of other things that can cause issues other than just arthritis.

Wow I'm starting to feel like I've been kept in the dark. I just checked her last stool sample results Catherine & I can't see anything about faecal calprotectin I am gathering if it's not covered by medicare they wont request it unless I ask which I will do depending on what the scopes show this time mid september. I will look into a rheumatologist My Little Penguine. I appreciate all of your help & information.

Hi Catherine,
Yes D was 80
B12 was 565
Red Cell Folate 1315
Celiac 3 of them were <1 & one was 2
Iron - Ferritin was 43
Which from what I can gather all seem pretty normal??

Yes they are all pretty normal. Do you have any other iron number?

Now what you need to watch for is movement in the numbers? Eg the trend.
