Unexpected possibility of crohns?

Hi all,

I am a 24 year old female with no other medical problems. I have been having occasional PR bleeding for the last 4 months and mild lower left abdominal pain for over a year. Family history of mum with bowel cancer and brother with severe crohns.

I had a colonoscopy a few days ago to rule out anything sinister as was worried about the possibility of cancer due to family history. Results show mild inflammation of the sigmoid colon (colitis) and terminal ileum (ileitis). Otherwise ok. Biopsies were taken and I'm waiting for the results.

I have read that crohns often affects the terminal ileum and an now worried, is it even possible that this could be crohns with such mild symptoms? My brother has very severe symptoms and was diagnosed at age 14. Any help or advice is appreciated!

Sorry to hear about your pain and test results. Yes, you may have a mild case now. Crohn's can vary in severity by person and within a persons lifetime. I have severe crohn's, my brother also has crohn's and has been in remission for years.

Welcome to the forum. Your on the right track. When the biopsy results are back your doctor will have a better clue. I am no way a doctor, but I'd say its a mild case of crohn's. I too have pain in the lower left side. I have a stricture near my terminal ileum. I'm sure others will weigh in as well.

Thank you for your comments, I'm so glad this forum exists. The doctor said it may be bowel prep induced (how horrible is Klean-prep by the way?!?) but stupidly being so worried about the prospect of bowel cancer I forget to mention that my brother has crohns...
The abdo pain is only a dull/ moderate constant ache and I've had no change in BM. I will update when the biopsy results are in.

I just rang my GP for the biopsy results, the receptionist said the Dr looked at them yesterday and that there is "normal small bowel and very mild inflammation of the large bowel" they do not want any further follow up. I'm confused does this rule out crohns completely? I was hoping for some more specific information as to what the inflammation was from...

I have asked for a doctor to ring me back later to explain a bit further. Can a pathologist differentiate between inflammation caused by crohns and other things i.e. NSAIDS etc from looking at the biopsy alone?
