Reading,
So over christmas I started to flair again. I had D everyday and pain. My CRP went up to 47 so the doctors decided to put me on steroid treatment. I started at 40mg and it definately made an improvement. Toilet habbits went back to normal but the pain didn't completely go away. After a week I reduced the dose down to 30mg and the pain started to come back and I was going to the toilet more. It was a couple of days before I needed to reduce again and so I rang my IBD nurse to say I thought it was too soon.
So they told me that I should go back up to 40mg and the GI wanted to see me again. Now I have been on 40mg for 5 days and I don't really feel much of an improvement. I am going to the toilet less but still have the pain in my abdomen.
The GI said that I can't stay on the 40mg for longer than two weeks. And so If I still don't feel well I will have to go to hospital to get it intraveinously. So I'm guessing she is thinking I'm not absorbing it properly. But my last blood test showed my CRP was at 'normal levels' so I don't really understand it.
She also said she wants to do an MRI scan to see inside. I havn't had one before. Will I still need to prep to clear my bowels?
Has anyone else had problems with Pred like this? I didn't think it would be difficult this early!
Any thoughts would be much appreciated :) x x x

I always had such a hard time coming off pred. I would rebound to my normal D very quickly. Keep in touch with your doc. I know sometimes pred is the only way but please be careful. I have the bones of a 90 year old.

Good luck,
Michele

Thanks michele,
I've been thinking about what you said and your right. I really don't want to stay on these steroids for longer than I need too. If they are bringing the inflammation down then they are working, somthing else must be causing the pain. I'll see how things go when I reduce the dose on Tuesday.
Anyone know what I'm getting myself in for with this MRI scan?

The MRI is pretty easy, aside from the Barium that you have to drink. But it really is no that bad, FARRRRRRRR better than a colonoscopy. I did have an issue with the Barium going straight through me so the MRI was a little longer because I had to go to the bathroom.

I'm surprised your doc said you can't be on Pred longer than 2 weeks. Last time I was on it, it took at least two weeks to start feeling better. I was on 40 mg of Pred for 5 months and was able to taper off once the Cimzia started to kick in.

Hope you start feeling better!

Edited to add: Ahhh, I missed the part about the IV Pred instead of oral...it's still early in the morning :)
