I looked this up i had a Intravenous Contrast CT if any body had one of these done let me know please.

Hi Bloom,
I had an IV Contrast CT about a month ago. Mine didn't hurt at all though, just felt a bit hot when the iv started to go in, but I did feel as if I needed to go to the bathroom urgently, or that I'd wet myself. I was warned by the radiographer that I would feel as if I had wet myself, although I hadn't, so was prepared for it!
The IV contrast will/should highlight any blockages, narrowing within your intestines. From what I was told, it's a farily common procedure for IBD.
Hope you feel better soon,
Andrea

Hi Bloom, it sounds like you had a bad reaction to the IV contrast? Something similar happened to me when I had an MRI recently. They injected the IV contrast while I was completely in the MRI machine - I'm not claustrophobic at all, so I wasn't worried. But the IV contrast gave me a massive dizzy spell and I felt I was about to pass out and I started panicking. They had to pull me out of the machine and calm me down and wait for the dizziness to pass. It was very unpleasant.

I've also had the IV contrast in a CT scan, as you mentioned, but I didn't have a bad reaction to that thankfully. It made me feel very warm for a minute, which I understand is a normal reaction to it. I believe it's iodine-based. Do you have an allergy to iodine perhaps? Sorry you had to go through that, I understand how awful it is to have a bad reaction to IV contrast from my MRI experience! Hopefully you're doing much better now.

Edit: I suppose I should clarify that the CT scan and the MRI have two completely different IV contrasts, which is why I had a reaction to one but not the other.

Welsh-Bird / Cat-a-Tonic,

Thank you so much i was really worried as i do think that i mite have had some sort of reaction i was in pain and felt paralized aswell as a bit dizzy, and the pain going down my arm caused me to cry they had to stop and wait for me to stop crying but i didnt so the just carried on quickly. I dont think i have an allergy to iodine but maybe i do it was so horrible. I really thaught i had gone to the toilet i even tried to get up and see but nobody told me that. To be honest i didnt know that was going to happen i just thaught it was a scan and thats all. I am a bit traumatized over the whole exp and will not be having another one done. The doc just said my GI will give me my results how long were both of you waiting?

Thnks a mil x

As far as how long the CT scan results take, it should be very quickly. When I had my CT scan, I was told the scan results themselves take about an hour. But it took a little while longer than that because my doctor had to look at the scans and interpret them. If you've just had the scan today, give your doctor a couple of days so he can look at the results. I would say definitely give your GI a call if you don't hear anything back by Monday.

Hi Bloom, poor you but the worst is over now so try and put it out of
your mind even though it won't be easy.Big hugs to you if it's any help x

oh that sounds rotten i've had 3 and all pain free but did get the warm feeling and the feeling of going to the loo but I had been well warned about this so knew I hadn't, I got the results straight away for the 1st two (taken by the consultant radiographers) and didn't hear anything for ages after the last (not sure who took it!!), I think it depends on how busy they are... all the best and fingers crossed it was a one off experience

Hey Bloom,

Roo had a CT Scan with the oral and IV contrast. The radiographer also told her about what she would feel etc, it was certainly uncomfortable as they injected but she didn't have pain like you experienced. Roo was in hospital when hers was done so I don't know if that makes a difference to getting your results but she had hers in the afternoon and the scans and report were waiting for the docs when came in the next morning.

I hope you feel better and good luck with the results!

Take care, :)
Dusty
