Hi Everyone,
I have just had a flexible sigmoidosopy to see how well or not the recent treatment that i have been on. Unfortunately after going through the chemotherapy and then the stem cell transplant it has not cleared and have been informed 1 hour ago that i will be having surgery.

So! After speaking to the surgeon whilst still a bit haisy from the sedation he informed me that i could possibly have 2 options which are:

1) Permanent iiestomy
2) J-pouch

Basically my small intestine is ok but my colon is almost completely had it.
I would really appreciate anyone’s suggestions and thoughts regarding the two options and how they are different. As my surgery is only 2 days away i am quite eager for this info.

Thank you all in advance and i look forward to being part of the stoma forum!

Adrian.

Adrian, do you have Crohns or UC?? I think a couple of folks on here have had the J pouch.

You might also post this in the surgery forum.

Myself, I have an ileostomy.

Hey Adrian,

I can't offer any advice about the surgery but I did want to say how sorry I am to hear that the Stem Cell Transplant didn't work for you.

Good luck with the surgery mate. I will be thinking about you!

The J-pouch keeps all of your plumbing inside. They usually don't do this for crohn's patients. If you have collitis, the J-pouch would be worth a try in my opinion. If it fails, you will end up with a permenant ileostomy. If it works, you get to keep your inside functions.

hey Adrian,

Sorry to hear you are unwell.

Nail the surgeon down and make him tell you while you aren't feeling hazy exactly what each option would mean to you in an ongoing situation, through working life and further treatment and so on.

You are the person at the centre of all of this mate, if it was that urgent he would have carted you straight down to theatre.

be strong and i wish you well

Get the reversible ileostomy.

You can hang on to it for a bit, and then make your choice as to if you want the J pouch or permanent. Only the first surgery is the required one, there is time to make your decision.
