You know I recently joined this forum on a fluke.

I have been posting and sharing and recently I ventured over to some threads that involved children and not just teenagers but young children.

I am angry, I am very very very angry.

For many years I have had the mind set, that Crohn's and the increase and common diagnosis of the illness has to be what we put into our bodies.

How can the FOOD INDUSTRY get away with what they are doing to our FOOD!!!!

I dunno maybe my thoughts are wrong....but after eating my own homegrown food, and organic, I see a difference in the food we buy at the stores, and what I grow myself and by from known organic growers and how my guts respond. Including meats that I purchase.

THis leads to an expensive grocery bill...but for my physical well being....

Something anything what is the connections that are turning on parts of our immune systems that literally attack our own bodies.

I have heard that it's merely evolution and due to our way of life.....

I have heard 3rd world countries do not have the issues we have have with IBD"S.

I have heard it's from antibiotics.

I have heard it's genetics.

I have heard it's mental well being.

There are so many reason's given...that sometimes I think that no one really knows what is what!!!!!!:mad2:

In February, my wife and I (just two of us) spent $699.56 on food. This is because we eat 100% organic and local whenever possible. That's an obscene amount of money for us and breaking the bank, but something we feel very strongly about. Since it's so expensive, I'm working towards growing 85% of our own food.

I don't believe that there is some grand evil conspiracy involving the food companies. I believe it is a byproduct of capitalism. Company X grows food and is listed on the stock market. Through natural growth of company X, profits increase by 5-10% per year which helps the stock rise. But then company X hits a wall and in order to please its investors and keep growing at 5-10% per year, it has to acquire other companies, so it does so. And some years go by and they hit that wall again so they start to do research into how to increase crop yields and end up buying genetically modified seeds and planting in ever increasing densities.

Because of the increased densities, the soil becomes nutrient deficient. So now the companies have to start pouring tons of petroleum based fertilizer into the soil. And because of the monoculture (single crop) and densities, pests become a huge problem so they have to use ever-more pesticides. So the foods become nutrient deficient because the soil is sterile and only has NPK instead of all the additional micro-nutrients and tainted from the pesticides.

This happens on the product side as well. Y company making TV dinners used to include somewhat healthy ingredients but in order to increase profits they have to start to cut corners. A little more salt as filler this year, a switch to high fructose corn syrup the next year, adding maltodextrin the next year. Off-shoring their plant the next year.

In a way, we brought this upon ourselves and we can also solve it. Buy organic, buy local, and raise as much of your own food as you can. If enough people do it, these companies will have to adapt and even better, we'll go back to more localized agriculture.

I agree it's not about conspiracy, it's about money, and where there is greed, there is shortcomings in quality. This lack of quality is passed onto the consumer and this is not only in our foods we would traditionally buy at the super market but in every market with everything. But mostly what causes me the greatest frustration is with our foods, Crohn's IBD's become more common, and it doesn't have to be this way. It never had to be this way.
