Violent hiccups

Forgive me if this has been discussed, I did a search and didn't see it. Does anyone else get hiccups a lot? My husband pointed out the other day that I get the most violent hiccups of anyone he knows (sometimes they even combine with a cough and/or a burp and shake my whole body- a lot of coughs/burps/hiccups in a row). I also get them fairly often.

I know that hiccups are related to the diaphragm, and can be related to stomach distention, so I'm wondering if it could be related to IBD, or I'm just a total freak. (Ok, I know you don't know me well enough to answer that last one yet!)

I get hiccups and it sounds like I am catching my breath at the same time. To me that is a bad sign it means I am headed for a severe blockage... I know sounds weird, but I dont recall me saying I was sane either LOL. Happens everytime.
Well, using logic, (and I'm not a doctor nor have I played one on TV), if you have a blockage, and things are getting pushed around, that could certainly irritate the diaphragm, right? I've never had a blockage (thank goodness!), but I've never kept note of when I get the hiccups, in relation to my other symptoms.

I have a new thing going on tonight, btw, i have a lot of dull pain in my stomach, mostly around my bellybutton and up, and i threw up. I HATE throwing up.

ps- I think totally sane people are boring;)

I did end up barfing. I feel less queasy now, but my stomach HURTS. I'm really hoping it's maybe just something I ate. I don't want to get antsy about every little, um, hiccup, as it were!

I'm sorry you're not feeling well also.

If these are new symptoms your doctor doesn't know about maybe you should schedule an appointment. Throwing up is no fun.

I hope you gals feel better soon. :)

No, it's not fun, and I tend to fight it for a long time when I'd just feel better if i let it go. I'm in the middle of a whole new round of testing, and have a follow up in a few weeks with the GI doc, so I'll be mentioning it then. Unless of course, it got bad enough that i'd seek urgent care. Thanks!

I hope you both feel better soon!

I haven't had extreme nausea to the point of vomiting in a long time, but when I did, I tried to fight it too. Something that always helped me was to stand over a faucet and let ice-cold water flow in and out of my mouth for a few minutes. Waste of water, but it stopped me from throwing up!

I hope you can find an answer soon!

I read its the miscommunication of the signals for breathing and swallowing, and hiccuping is the body's attempt to resynchronize them back correctly...big deep breaths help me sometimes to rid them...and I want to because I get very violent ones sometimes too, actually become very painful in the chest because they're so powerful...dunno if that helps...

I do the slow breathing thing too. It DOES help, but man, it hurts til it does. I bet I'm super funny to watch though. I'm feeling a lot better this morning, btw. Things have settled down to a dull roar, the "normal" discomfort. Thanks for the good wishes, maybe it WAS something I ate yesterday.

My husband and son drink water when they get the hiccups and they put a paper towel over the glass and drink the water through the paper towel.
I don't know if it adds just the right amount of air to the swallowing or what, but it seems to work for them and quickly.
Old wive's tale, maybe. Maybe not.

MBH, I've read that you should try drinking upside down, or from the opposite side of the cup. With my luck, I'd just drown myself. :D
