anyone else doing this?
I just had another small bowel surgery (30cm removed) and my doc put me on this.

I had my Terminal Ileum removed in 1996 and have been on B12 injections every three months since. I was told this particular part of the bowel is the only area that will naturally absorb B12, hence why I need to have the injections.

Yep, my ileum is also gone and I need periodic injections as well. Not weekly, but I can usually feel when I'm starting to need one.

will there be anything I will notice from this?
I've read up on it, but nothing was really said about feeling improvement, so when you say you start to feel like you need one what do you mean?

Just run down, ragged. Much like being anemic. B12 deficiency is pretty much one form of anemia. Iron is another. Both are needed to create more red blood cells. So generally when I find myself sleeping longer and longer and not feeling like I've gotten enough sleep even when I do; when I feel like I just can't drag my butt up even to do stuff that I want to do, I figure it's time for another dose.

Usually as far as taking the B12, my arm sometimes feels a little sore or weak for a little bit afterward. Occasionally it'll make me feel a little sleepy the same day I take it. It's usually not that big a deal though. Usually a couple days afterward you can feel at least a little difference, mostly in just a little more energy and a slightly better outlook.

And you need adequate supplies of B12 and iron to aid in proper healing.

i also have B12 injections every 3 months. sometimes when its my due date, i really feel the depletion.. feel tired, dizzy, shaky, and this goes within 48 hours of the jab. other times i feel absolutely fine even tho its my due date. but, heck, those injections do sting! lol

dingbat.

My doctor put me on b12 injections once a month, but I start to feel run down way before that. It seems like the dosage frequency can range from every week to every three months. Is it dangerous to take b12 too often? Would I be taking any risk by injecting weekly?

I get them once a month. I'm Ielumless also. I start really getting tired when I need one and my face will hurt and start to get really raw and red on my cheeks

by error in calculation, i recently had my b12 injection only 2 months after the last, instead of 3 months. once i'd realised this, i contacted the gp who said it was fine - nothing to worry about, as i dont have the capacity to absorb & store much of it anyway...

but having said that, i would check with a physician before increasing any medication, even if its just a vitamin...

I'm also Ileumless and was getting B-12 shots for about a year and my GI told me that I do not need them anymore! I feel pretty good but wonder if I should get them again?

I've had them since 99. I can't see why u wouldn't need them. Man I can sure tell when its time for mine

Well, with removal of key portions of the GI tract, absorption is impossible, so injections are absolutely necessary from that point on. but in some cases, the body adapts, and absorption becomes possible in other areas. same holds true for instances where inflamation made absorption impossible, but with healing, it no longer becomes mandatory. Every case is unique, but i'm guessing that ones doctor would know where you would fall

Best bet is to learn to listen to what your body is telling you, and check with the doc in case theres a mistake, and oversight, or a change, okay?

Need a better supplier for injections!

I had my Terminal Ileum removed in 2004 and have been on B12 injections every three months since. I have heard of a less expensive place to purchase the injections has anyone else tried this place Trim Nutrition?

I get my B12 injections every month. My doctor said that once you start B12 injects you should get them for the rest of your life. I feel so much better after an injection and I do not think they hurt at all. I do get a bitter taste in my mouth right after the injection but that goes right away. I always get the weird side effects:yfrown:

I take get the shots once a month, it stays in your body for quite some time if you dont get in exactly one month. I never feel a thing, no sides, just more energy. Always good to get blood work done regularly , with Diahreah and absorption loss, we lose stuff we dont realize and best to catch it early. B12, Vitamin D3 and calcium is my most important stuff.

I get a shot every 8 weeks, co-incides with my remicade infusion....I have NOT had any surgeries, but my B12 levels are low anyway......

i get them every 3 months, altho when i spent time overseas last year my family doc wanted me on monthly injections, when i came back to scotland they got me back on 3 monthly as was the policy.....cant make their minds up! didnt see much difference with getting them monthly or 3 monthly but definitely know when my 3 months are up, feel tired and lethargic.
not had any surgeries but 2/3 of my large intestine is badly scarred from previous flares so absorption is pants....

I haven't had any surgery but my b12 levels just kept dropping and dropping so now I get b12 injections every month at the moment. I feel better for the injections but I'm still ridiculously tired all the time.

I was told they didn't hurt, needless to say I got a surprise the first time. I can think of worse things though!

i have my vit b12 every 4 weeks. it was every 3 months but my blood test kept coming back low.

I had my surgery in may of this year and the surgeon told me I would have to start taking the b12 shots and told me to ask my gp to prescribe them for me. He said that I don't need them just take a pill every day and said there have been new study's that say i will absorb it even without my terminal illeum. I am no doc so I guess time will tell.

I have taken this for a month or so. It is a nasal spray once a week:

My Dr. felt bad that I have to jab myself with Metho and Humira. The one drawback is that it is VERY expensive (several hundred). But my insurance pays for it in full.

Hi Dusty,

I would double check with your GI if I were you regarding the B12 injections. I would be interested to see these studies as I have never found anything to refute the fact that B12 is absorbed in the terminal ileum. Both Of Roo's GI's are adamant about keeping her B12 regime up to date.
