Has anyone had vitamin deficiencies due to their Crohns? I had very low b1, folate, zinc, b12, and borderline b6.. there might have been one more.. anyhow.. I have had stomach issues x 3 years.. and neurological issues that followed.. now wondering if they were caused by my vitamin deficiencies?

If your gut is inflamed it isn't surprising that you can't absorb your food well, so vitamins and minerals would become deficient. My daughter had low iron, and instead of giving iron supplements that could cause even more gastric distress, we supplemented with lactoferrin and Vitamin B-12. Vitamin D3 supplements are also important. In a few weeks her levels were back in the normal range and she was feeling better in terms of her Crohn's also. I have to wonder which caused which....

I have anemia which causes series fatigue! I take a lot of supplements to keep other vitamin levels up since it's hard for me to absorb them. If you are really low, there are shots you can take to boost your levels for some vitamins as well.

Are you supplementing?

Vitamin and mineral deficiencies are EXTREMELY common in people with Crohn's disease. And yes, there is a good chance that your neurological issues are related.

Yes! This is an issue i believe many of us suffer with. Im deficient in Vitamin D, B12, Iron and folic acid. Whenever i get one back to normal another one dips haha

A deficiency in vitamin B12 is known to cause some slight neurological problems for example pins and needle and sensation changes. I guess you can never be sure if the deficiencies are the cause of the symptoms, unless you replenish them and you feel the symptoms subside!

thank yall! My Vit D was borderline low- I am outside all the time, so that helps I'm sure... I do have blood coming from somewhere - they think small bowel (pill cam coming soon- my scope showed everything was friable but no obvious answers).

I just started taking supplements this week when we got those results.. I sure hope that will fix my neuro issues - they seem to get worse when my stomach flares.. I have weakness, numbness, tingling and more :) I also have lhermittes sign, which I read can be caused by B12 deficiency (my MS workups have been negative)- i had no idea b12 could cause that!

They said my B1 was "undetectable" .. kind of strange!

At various points I've seen labwork that showed iron deficiency as well as Vit D deficiency. I tried supplementing with iron (rx and otc) but it didn't seem to help that much. Just getting things under control made a much bigger difference. Ditto with the rx Vit D pills.

I've never actually had a doctor mention a b12 deficiency but I'm positive I've had it for a while. I started using a transdermal patch which worked very well for me. I noticed a big difference within a week and I got some bloodwork done that showed my levels were nice and high a few months ago. I have ileo colitis so it stands to reason the b complex pills I tried before had little effect.

I am currently deficient in magnesium, potassium, calcium, vitamin D, iron, and vitamin B12. Fun stuff....
