Maybe you guys on here could help me out with this. I am a volunteer fire fighter in New York. Have flairs on and off. Missed a couple fire couple of fire calls which the department is trying to charge my money for it. Have Crohn's disease. Is there an ADA law that protects me from being fined/punished? It's not like I was out partying.
I did explain the situation, and they told me that everyone has to pay their fines.

I'm sorry, but i was on a volunteer fire department when i was younger. I know how it is being short handed when you get to the fire and how much that put everyone's life at danger.

For us if you were not able to be on call than you needed to find your replacement for your call shift.

I don't know what your departments SOP is, but it sounds like your SOP's have fines attached. You should of known this from the beginning and issues should of been discussed before hand and how to handle your issues.

This is volunteer fire department? That means they are not paying you anything, right? If that's the case then I'd tell them to just deduct the fines from your fire department wages

Ok, first off, what do you mean by fining you? Is it part of the bylaws?

I see your location is listed as Manhattan, where are you actually a volunteer?

If you would like, private message me with more details, I am intimately familiar with the fire service and assorted laws in New York.

It is part of the bylaws but the bylaws are (intentionally) vague so they can be interpreted a number of different ways. I'm a volunteer with the "Great Neck Alerts."
Already wrote them a letter stating that I would not pay the fine and they they should look up their ADA laws and to not send me the letter again.
