Hi all

Since J's Coeliac diagnosis, her GI has felt that her abdo pain, rectal bleeding, vomiting and nausea is due to her eating someting with gluten in. We have been SO VERY CAREFUL and we know that she really hasn't had anything at all with gluten in.

Over the last few days her nausea and vomiting has increased and she is now not able to hold down any food for more than 5 mins.

This morning she vomited blood clots. After contacting her IBD nurse and seeing her GP this morning they have arranged more blood tests and we are waiting for the IBD nurse to talk to the consultant.

She has just vomited again. One of the blood clots was the size of a golf ball! This is so scary. I don't think J told her nurse or the doctor what sort of size these clots were... Has anyone else had anything similar? What could cause this?

Sorry, no advice... wish I had some info for you. I hope you get some answers QUICKLY!!! I can imagine how worried you are! Did the GP have any suggestions at all as to what could be causing this (other than gluten)?

Lots of hugs:ghug: :ghug:

Is she in the hospital NOW?

Grace passed some blood clotts in her stool. I was told that COULD be a good sign of the healing process. Blood clotts could mean the "scab" over the wound is coming off.
My goodnees, golf ball size! Hugs to you both.
Paging DustyKat, kimmidwife, izzi'smon
BUT............she needs to get better answers quick!

No he just suggested blood tests to see how much blood she's losing and to put her pred back up to 60mg. If she doesn't improve or gets worse she has to to go straight to A&E

But, even if you increase her pred, that will take a bit of time to take effect. I have absolutely no experience with anything like this but, if she continues vomiting large blood clots, I think I would take her to the hospital.

Hopefully, the IBD nurse will get back to you soon! And maybe someone who has dealt with this before...

I have had the blood clots before but not that big! Mine were from vomiting for so long I tore up things the hole way up and it was trying to heal. Maybe she is having a reaction to something besides gluten! I have a friend who the Dr. thought had lupus treated her for a year and then figured out she is allergic to, god almost everything! but she now knows how to handle it. I know this wasnt the anwser but I hope it helps! Keep us posted good luck!

If she carries on vomiting like this I will take her up to A & E, hopefully nurse will call back soon.

J has been vomiting for well over a week now, so you may be right Amber!

Man that really sucks I truly hope they figure it out soon! I know how bad she hurts vomiting like that! I will be thinking about you guys all day! I will check in later when I get off work! Better news is on the way! Happy thoughts right:)

That doesn't sound good at all. If you don't get answers soon, I would go to ER. Better to be safe than sorry. This new flu that is out is supposed to be brutal. She could even have a touch of that. I'm sorry :( I hope she's feeling better soon and you get some answers. ((((hugs))))

Her nurse wanted her to go straight to hospital. J being an adult now is refusing! She says that she will be sat up in the wrong ward all weekend being 'monitored' nothing will get done over the weekend!

She has a point! This has happened on numerous occasions before. She has promised IBD nurse that if she doesn't get any better or gets worse she will go straight up. She thinks if she only eats pureed food or drinks then hopefully the vomiting will stop!

This evening she has only vomited once and the blood clots are much smaller than earlier.

Fingers crossed she will only get better over the weekend!

Sorry for the late reply...time difference. :(

How are things going now Niks?

Yes, if the vomiting and/or bleeding continues get to the ER.

The cause of the bleeding sounds more acute in nature than chronic. By that I mean, if the blood was old it would not appear as clots, the vomit would be a uniform brown colour that is referred to as coffee grounds. It may well be due to the fact that she has been vomiting for a week and the stomach and oesophagus are irritated, as Amber has said.

Good luck! I hope you have heard back by now!

Sorry to hear about the throwing up blood clots - must be very worrying!! I would have said go straight to ER, but I totally understand why you wouldn't bother. There have been quite a few times I have just tried "to make it through the weekend" with my kids as I know there is hardly any staff on - or none that would be able to make a decision anyway. Hope things settle down over the weekend.

Pain much worse than normal over night so we are heading to hospital.... She is really hoping she doesn't have to stay in :(

I am so sorry to hear that Niks. :ghug:

Good luck! I hope you are given solid answers and peace of mind!

Sending healing thoughts your way.

Sorry, I've never met you Niks. Hope things are improving for her. Your thread made me think about how frustrating it must be for you to no longer have complete control of when or what treatment she undergoes. I won't have to face that for a few more years but, as a constant worrier anyway, I can only imagine! Good luck!

They're keeping her in, and doing more camera procedures.. Upped Pred. Seem to be right back to square one. My worry is that the Pred disguises the problems. We have been here so many times now. She has never weaned off and as soon as she goes lower than 20mg she gets ill.

She is scared to eat even though now on IV anti sickness :(

I hope things settle soon...:ghug:

I am glad she is getting some extra care and hopefully will start eating soon.

Pred will reduce inflammation and allow for healing but many people find they cannot go below a certain amount or symptoms recur. Is she on a maintenance medication?

Sometimes there are very inflamed areas that just don't respond to prednisone and need to be surgically removed. Have they done any imaging (MRE) to see how things are internally?

Hoping she is feeling better soon and able to eat.

They are talking about doing more imaging next week.. I really hope they can work out where her problems are. She is really upset about being back in hospital :(

Sorry that she's had to be admitted but must be a bit of a relief to know she's being looked after! I imagine they're doing endoscopy and colonscopy??? As scopes won't show images from the small bowel, hopefully, they will be doing an MRE next week. I hope you get some answers!!! And that some of her pain has alleviated a bit. :ghug:

Hugs ..., hope the imaging studies give some insight.
She may need stronger maintence meds ( 6-mp or remicade)

Thanks for all your replies! It is great to know there is such great support out there.

She is having endoscopy tomorrow morning, I guess it depends on what they see there as to what happens after that!

Good luck with the endoscopy tomorrow. Hope they can get something sorted! Poor thing - nothing worse than being stuck in hospital, although at least in the right place if she feels worse.

Thanks for the updates Niks...

As much as I hate kids being in hospital I am relieved to know they have admitted her and are being proactive about finding answers! :)

Good luck with the scope tomorrow! I hope you get solid answers and soon! :goodluck:

Should hopefully get results from scope tomorrow... Because of her Coeliacs they keep 'forgetting' to order her food!!!! GRRRR, I know she has no appetite, but why ask if she is holding food down when they haven't given her any!!!!!

Still being very sick, so glad she is in hospital and at least has fluids going through

Hi I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter. And how awful that they keep forgetting her food. The lack of communication in hospital always astounds me. I hope you get sorted and know what's happening as quickly as possible.
I know when I was in hospital with my daughter we used to get someone to bring food in as the hospital food was so awful. But atleast she had the option.
Take care x

Hi Stephyjane

We have been doing the same with J, but you're right, would be good to have the option! Plus if she does happen to be there over a meal time and I am not around would be great to know that she was being offered something! She is old enough to ask, but feeling so unwell, she just doesn't!

Bless her. It's horrible being in hospital. Ella has allergies so gets the red band but you can guarantee they will always go to use or give her something she's allergic to.
I know they are busy but they take enough details every time you are admitted.
I hope she's home really soon xx plus the really nice staff make up for the not so nice ones.

Hi all!

So far everything has come back negative!! Her GI has said that he is gouing to wean off pred and see what happens.

She is still vomiting but no more blood thank goodness.

They are letting her come home today with enemas to get her bowels working properly. So frustrating! How can she be so poorly with nothing showing on any of her tests!!??

So they have no explanation for why she was vomitting blood??? How frustrating for you! I hope she begins to improve soon!! :ghug:

He thinks it was where she has been vomiting so much. They did take biopsies but those results haven't come back yet..

I have a feeling without any steroids she will get worse, but I guess we have to try! :/

Hugs
Did they at least give her zofran to take at home if the vomiting starts again so she doesn't get bad ???

Well at least your getting somewhere now. I'm glad the blood has stopped. Hopefully the biopsies will tell you something soon! fingers crossed!

Hi MLP

She does have ondansetron, which I think is the same! It doesn't stop her being sick but does help.

Ondansetron not working, she has been really sick today , she feels really light headed and has bad pins and needles!! Any ideas anyone??

Wish I did have some ideas for you, but not something I can help with. Hope she feels better!

Has she ever had her B12 levels tested? One sign of B12 deficiency is pins and needles. It can also cause light headedness, among other things.

If it hasn't been done please be sure they test it.

I hope she is soon feeling better, poor thing...

Johnny has had the pins and needles and lightheadedness when he is dehydrated. I have him sip on Gatorade to keep him hydrated while vomiting. Do you have anything similar to Gatorade?

I am so sorry she is not feeling well yet.

Praying for a better day today..

Her pins and needles are starting in her fingers, spreading to her hands then up her arms, then goes to her toes, feet up her legs and has spread right up her back! Not nice, poor girl. She has also been getting nasty headaches. She has much stronger laxatives and her bowels have been moving but she now has very loose, bloody mucussy stools!

After researching this I think that you might be right DustyKat! I am going to be talking to the gastro team tomorrow and see if we can get her B12 levels tested

After speaking to J's nurse and getting her to check her B12 levels she said the last test showed her levels were low but not worryingly so. I asked when that was... OCTOBER!!! She has been so ill since then and admitted to hospital 5 times.. How on earth has this not been checked again! GRRR . We are going tomorrow for another test. I am just wondering if anyone else has the same problems in having to find out information themselves before anything is done? :/

How frustrating! I have to say Andrew's IBD team are generally pretty good at keeping me up to date, but for me and the rest of the family, I spend most of the time trying to chase things up! How's she feeling now?

She is nauseous, has a bad headache, pins and needles everywhere and feels really light headed. She doesn't want to go to the doctor or hospital because she thinks her GI doc doesn't think there is anything wrong with her :(.

There must be something wrong - and it would take an awfully callous human being to deny that much, especially a doctor who has treated her before. I would think its still worth it to go back in. Sounds like its not something that will go away staying home.

Glad I came through and read this...learned something new...about B12 causing those tingling feelings.

I hope tomorrow brings you and J some much needed sunshine. (I know that's rare in England)

Hey girl just wanted to check on you guys and see if things were looking better. Hope its 10 times better now:)

Hi Amber

She is in hospital after a long few is weeks of deteriorating. Not able to keep any food or water down.

Her GI is convinced she has coeliacs, but she does not seem to be improving with diet, (started mid December) the only thing that seems to help right now is Pred.

She is now on B12 injections which will hopefully help the pins and needles, just need to sort the rest of her out!

Wow, I just read this whole thread sorry I have been MIA. I really hope they get it figured out this time before they hit her with the Pred to hide the cause. Praying for your girl. It can be so frustrating, remind her that the doctor are probably just as frustrated and they are there to help. Take care.

I'msorru to hear about your daughter! Is her small bowell checked? It sounds like there must be something wrong in there. I hope you get the answers soon!

QG, they have already put her on Pred... You're right so frustrating. He is suspecting Refractory Coeliacs, I really don't think it is!

Jimena - they have done scopes down and up! But no, they have not done any test that can see into her small bowel. Her GI doesn't think it's necessary!

:ywow:
