Ordinarily I take Dr. Ohhira's probiotics but decided to take VSL#3 after a UCer suggested it. So I bit the bullet and spent the money to try this. While I read that bloating would be a possible side effect within the first few days of taking VSL, I have been experiencing enormous gas and diarrhea like never before. My MMJ usage which combats bathroom urgancies and frequency is no match for VSL as my daily bathroom trips doubled to 6 or 7 times. I'm even getting up in the middle of the night. And while I expected some bloating as I've experienced with my other probiotics, I'm not sure if this is normal. This is day 4 and I've been taking 2 in the morning and 2 in the evening.

Anyone else experience these effects or know if this is normal and I should goin?

I know probiotics can upset some peoples guts. It is better to start off slow and work your way up. Maybe try taking one capsule a day for a week then move up to two caps a day and go from there. I am taking a probiotic by renewlife called 50 billion critical care. I have been on it for years but I slowly weaned my self on to it. Taking too many probiotics too fast can overload your system. I would cut it back and go up slowly, I mean see how it goes.

I took Vsl#3 for about a year and really couldn't point out any differences. I couldn't imagine that the probiotics would be giving you this much of a problem but it is definitely plausible. Personally I am one of the rare people against supplemental probiotics for a number of reasons. One being i know the body can create it's own probiotics and to force it to take a certain strain where there are so many others may in theory cause some gut problems.

While I didn't have problems with VSL3, I seemed to have problems when i tried to make a probiotic cocktail as it often backfired and I saw my symptoms becomes less manageable. Maybe try cutting the dose in half or even 4ths and going up from there each week and see if that remedies the problem.

And i hope you are keeping the bottle in the refrigerator:)

Thanks. Yeah I've been keeping them in the fridge. I'll prob drop to just 2 a day. But another thing is that I just got off bactrim for an unrelated abscess so I wouldn't be surprised if my flora is completely out of whack... :/

I bought some VSL a few years ago and every time I took it I would break out in hives. Threw the bottle out. I've tried other probiotics and they don't seem to agree with me either. They would give me terrible diarrhea so I finally stopped buying them and throwing them out. I personally think probiotics are way overrated.

Wow that's crazy. I take the capsules. I didn't take any last evening or this morning and didn't have any sense of urgency at all... and I actually slept through the night. I think ihurt is correct, especially after reading the FAQs on the vsl website today. We'll see how it goes but I know this will be my first and only bottle of vsl.
