Hey everyone,

It has been awhile since I posted on here. I have been lurking around though. I have not been diagnosed with crohn's, but have been having gut issues for about almost three years now. I have had the following tests, Blood work, abdominal ultrasound, MRE of small bowel( 2 years ago), colonoscopy(last year) CT scan without the drink( year and half ago). These tests never showed anything so my gastro doctor keeps saying I Have IBS.

I have other health issues as well ( Interstitial Cystitis, fibromyalgia, Chronic immune deficiency, chemical sensitivities, and supposed IBS among other stuff).

My gut has not been too bad this past year actually. I mean I would still have my days, but all in all it has not been bad, up until recently. I will say that this last four months I have been under tremendous stress due to some personal issues my family and I have been going through. This past Monday I started getting the chills in the afternoon. By evening I had a fever. My temperature hovered between 99.9 and 100.3 so it was not super high but enough to where I felt awful. I also had a horrid headache and awful muscle pains. I figured I was maybe getting a flu or some bug. During the night I still had awful chills and was sweating as well. I woke up Tuesday and went to go pee and on my way back to bed I felt kind of clammy and felt like I may vomit. I laid down for about an hour more and that sick feeling passed. I got up and ate something and just sat around that day. I still had the fever about the same( 100.1). By Wednesday my fever was gone, but I started getting some discomfort in my gut, like crampy waves of pain near the navel area. They seemed to get worse as the day went on. I never vomited and never had diarrhea. I had a BM on Tuesday Morning and again on Tuesday evening. I also got my period on Tuesday so that did not help matters as I always have pain when I get my period. But this gut pain was too high up for that. It was near my navel area. I went to bed Wednesday night and woke up around midnight with that awful crampy wave of pain again in my mid abdomen near my navel. It was pretty bad. I felt slightly sick, but the not too much nausea, it was just the pain. I also chewed up some ant acid pills because my stomach felt like it was burning somewhat.

I could not get comfortable and that crampy pain was terrible. I called the Gastro doc on call and she was not helpful at all. We just decided to go to the Emergency Room. They took blood and I gave a urine sample. That all came back normal. The ER doc said he was not sure what was going on, but he did not think it was life threatening at that point. We discussed the possibility of it maybe being an ulcer or gastritis, but again he was not sure. He said the blood work ruled out anything like pancreatitis or liver or gallstone issues. So of course they sent me home and told me to follow up with my Gastro doctor! Again, I swear I will not go back to the ER unless I am near dead as they are no help at all! I talked to my gastro doc's nurse and he said I should just be on a liquid diet for a day or so and then slowly add low residue foods. He also said I could try and take zantac or something. He was thinking it was possibly IBS related!!! WHAt???? Since when does IBS wake you up in crampy waves of pain like that in the mid and upper abdomen? Also what about that whole fever thing? I mean it was strange. When I had the chills and fever and muscle pains, I really thought I was just getting a flu virus or something. At that point I did not feel sick and my gut was not really bothering me at all. The gut pain started after the fever left. It was not the stomach flu either as I did not vomit nor did I have the runs which I always get with the stomach bug. What the hell could be wrong with me? I know I have H-pylori, I have had it for years( most people do have it in their guts). I wonder if will all the stress I have been under could have caused gastritis or an ulcer to form. I am not able to take the treatment for H-pylori as I have too many allergies and adverse reactions to most all antibiotics and I cannot take PPIS at all.

I am beyond frustrated with the ER and my gastro doc. I mean my gastro wants me to do the liquid diet a day or so and then just go bland and update him in a week unless things get way worse then I am to call him right away. Sorry for this long post, but does anyone have any ideas here?? Was the fever related to what is going on in my gut? But then why did I have the headache and muscle pains all over? The fever is gone now, but I am still having the crampy gut pain near my navel and upper gut. The crampy pains are not as bad now since I have only been drinking liquids, but I do still have some slight burning in my gut. I am afraid to eat any solids again though... :sign0085:

Sorry that you have been feeling so badly and that no one has really listened to you. Have you considered, even though I know this may not be an easy thing, looking for a second opinion from another GI? Also, possibly consulting an allergist to help you find something to treat the H-pylori that you are not allergic to? I know this may be a long shot, but just something to consider.

Thanks for the support and reply, it is appreciated. I thought about maybe getting a different GI doc if mine cannot figure this out. I actually do have an allergist. Unfortunately my allergist said she can only deal with certain antibiotics that cause actual allergic type reactions( hives, itchiness etc..). Most of the side effects I get are actually adverse reactions that cannot be prevented. This is what makes things very hard for me. My body does not do well on antibiotics or most medications for that matter. I know for H-pylori you have to be on two or three different ones at the same time. That is just not happening for me:yfrown: My body would not tolerate that at all and it would probably open up a whole different can of problems. My gastro doc even said he was pretty sure my body would never handle those meds. It sucks being so sensitive to medications, this makes things very difficult. I am trying to look into the more natural and alternative route to see if there is something that can help. I have read about a few different things that may help with killing H-pylori that are on the natural side. Not sure if it will do it, but I am looking into it. At this point I really don't know what is going on though or what is causing this awful pain and that is more frustrating than anything :(

Hmmm...I know that some allergist can deal with non-actual allergic type reactions. I wonder if it was the allergist I saw that dealt with that or if it was the dermatologist I saw. I have strange and uncanny reactions to medications, as well, as I am usually not allergic to the medication itself, but the inactive ingredients and dyes in it, making it become one that I am "allergic" to or have to list on my drug allergies. I am venting, but I wish it was just easy and uncomplicated. I hope that they can find something to at least ease your pain and that you can find something to help with the h-pylori. I would suggest reading the reviews of doctors in your area on this forum. I know some of them have helped me to weed out certain doctors on my insurance and helped me to seek further information on those that people like, as I am currently looking to switch my GI, due to some things that I just don't like about the GI practice I am going to.

Oh wow, sorry to hear about your also having a hard time with taking meds. That is hard to deal with I know. I could ask my dermatologist just to see what he says. That or maybe I can look for another allergist to maybe get another opinion. Thanks for all the info I really appreciate it. Good luck and I hope you can find a GI doc that works for you.

I'm very sorry to hear you are still struggling without a diagnosis!

Do you think this fever thing was a one off, or part of your chronic illness? Did the liquid diet that your gastro suggested help? Have you tried solid foods again?

Doctors used to believe that stress caused stomach ulcers, but that's been disproved now. So even if you were stressed, it wouldn't have been the cause of an ulcer (or of gastritis).

Hi Unxmas,

I have added some solids now, not many though. I mean I am basically eating chicken broth and applesauce. I started Thursday with just liquids. I did eat a small piece of Gluten free toast that evening so I could take my medication. I did ok with that. Friday morning I ate a small piece of toast and maybe a couple bites of banana. For lunch I ate chicken broth with 2 crackers. I still have not eaten any meats. I might try and add some today, but I am scared. I am getting some pain still, not horrible where it wakes me up though and that is likely because I am eating Way less.

My GI doc wanted me to just do the liquid and bland diet for the week and contact him with an update next week. He did want to do a upper endoscopy right at this point. He said he wanted to wait and see how it goes for the week. He threads lightly when it comes to doing tests because he knows I have all these other health issues. Actually I would not mind the upper endoscopy. I have had like 6 of them in the last 13 years, though I have not had one in the last 7 years. If this continues I am sure that will be the next step.

How are you feeling Unxmas?

I have no clue what caused the whole fever, your guess is good as mine. I honestly thought it was a flu or something because I had the whole headache and body aches, chills. My dad said maybe I caught like a bug that inflamed my gut. I don't know though because I never vomited and had the nasty runs like you do when you get a stomach bug. The fever has been gone now though since Wednesday. The only other thing that happened was my period came at the same time. I wonder if that could be connected somehow of maybe it was just a coincidence.

I'm just struggling terribly trying to get my weight up. I hope you'll be able to eat a bit more without pain again soon, as that kind of liquid/soft diet can't keep you going all that long. Hopefully the bug thing was just a one-off for you then. I suppose there must be some that don't come with vomiting and diarrhoea.
