Hi guys,

went for bloods today 2 weeks on aza and Iv had to come off it. They said my white cell level was lower than expected and also other changes (non aza related) because this chest infection is pnumonia and had to give me another different course of antibiotics and cant risk leaving me on aza now. So off it until iv recovered and go to clinic. Anyone been taken off aza and y? what drug do you think they will try next or do you think they will try me on it again?? Its a bit frustrating cos that is my safety net for getting off the tube feeds in a months time and all these antibiotics are already pushing t crohns backwards. Im quite worried but trying not to be just wondered if u guys have faced this???? Also gotta have bloods done mon am an if no better have to be admitted again for iv antibiotics!

I went from Azathioprine to Mercaptopurine (otherwise known as 6MP) as I didn't tolerate it - it made me nauseous and stomach pain. Aza is metabolised into 6MP and something else which some people dont tolerate. When that made me spectacularly ill... I tried Methotrexate - less said about that one!

Before I got on to Humira, which I loooove!

I was going to say try Humira, it is to me the less risky drug than Remicade. Anti biotics are great but take it from me, it isnt good long term. My body hates all the immunosuppressors, my liver rejects it. You will have to try other treatments to find you combo. Good luck, keep us posted with your progress or lack of.

I would think either Remicade or Humira. Aza isn't really cutting it for me so I was given the choice of Remicade/Humira or surgery. I have chosen surgery and am now just waiting for a surgical consult.

I was taken off aza after a good few months on it, it was working for me, I was leading a normal life until I was struck down by glandular fever. Ended up in hospital in protective isolation as they found my white cells to be very low and took me off aza.

They waited until I'd recovered and put me back on aza with close monitoring. Its been nearly a year on it and this time its not really workin for me. They want to give it more time but I don't know what to do. Got an appointment next month so gonna see what they say.

I had two significant bowel obstructions while on Azathioprine and Asacol. For the last 8 years I've done Remicade and Humira with very few issues. The Humira is much more convenient since he can be done at home versus the Remicade which was 2-3 hrs every 4-8 weeks.

And while it works great, you will build resistance to both and see the effects slowly taper off.
