Hi,

My crohns is in my small bowel where the two bowels meet, for the past month ive been experiencing a side pain by the hip area. it is very tender and sensitive specially on the bone, ive been for a kidney scan and showed no problems there. Ive tried playing my usual sport and I struggle to run hard or play any pyhical sport as any small knock causes pain.
This pain is away from where mass was previously felt and feels a little swollen. I can not cough without feeling pain, can not jump or do anything very fast.

What could be causing this pain? can Inflammation shift?
I am on Azathioprine (doing absolutely nothing) and Prednisone

Hi, Zahid Hassan!

I'm afraid I don't have any solid answer for you. :( Is it possible that it could be joint pain in your hip?

 I hope you feel better soon!

Sorry, Zahid, that you're having complications. The first things that sprang to my mind for hip pain was arthritis or a psoas abscess. Are your doctors planning to do any more tests?

I had extreme pain on both sides. I went to PT and they put me on an exercise ball and had me roll side to side and back and forth with my feet 20 times each day on both ways. Try it, it honestly helped me. I couldn't believe it. They said if you sit at a computer alot, this happens and I can't remember why! But try it. The balls are cheap!

What side is the pain on?

Have you ever had surgery in the area? Has there been any imaging done? It could be a hernia, especially with the sudden motions causing aggravation.

I would definitely say that it is abdominal, as it is aggravated by coughs. A cough wouldn't (I wouldn't think) cause shocks to the hip, aggravating hip arthritis.

Could it be a torn muscle or tendon? If you are active, a blow, fall, or overexertion could have torn something muscular, giving tenderness, stiffness, and aggravatable pain.

A simple test for muscular vs visceral is to lie down. Now find the spot of pain, and push on it to feel the tenderness. Now flex the muscles over the area, and press again. If it is still aggravated, it is likely a muscular injury (or perhaps a hernia), if not, it is likely visceral.

Are you having further intestinal disturbances? If when this came on, your stomach problems flared up, it is likely associated with those same problems.

Also, probably most importantly, go to the doctor about it? He'd be able to assess first hand, or refer for more effective diagnostics.

Best of luck
Nathan

This sounds like it might not even be related to your IBD, but rather a skeleto-muscular problem. I agree that it might be from sitting at a computer too long, or bad sitting posture, or sleeping "funny". Sometimes this can mimic kidney infections. And, it can last for a long time. Physical therapy will help.
