Ok I own up, I fell into a very bad habit over the years of taking my Pentasa not always with water, sometimes with tea & in the evening Ovaltine.
By doing this I think I have possibly ruined the effect they can have. Anyone else guilty? I think that after so long I just became totally blase about it. However now I am just taking them with water again.

Does tea, Ovaltine or any other non-water liquid cause Pentasa to be not effective? I know you should avoid certain liquids with certain medications (e.g. Entocort should not be taken with grapefruit juice), but wasn't aware there was any restriction with Pentasa.

To answer your question - I take any and all medicines with water only.

95% of the time it's water for me, but occasionally sports drinks or Coke if I already have one open. But I don't recall Pentasa having any restrictions on the pharmacy instructions readout.

I always take meds with food and take them with water. Unless you are taking Cipro, which I do. Caffeine in drinks can intensify or alter your medicines especially pain killers. Also never take with grapefruit juice unless you ask your pharmacy.

I always took my meds with Coke. Seemed to be the only way I could get them down. I talked to my doctor about it and she said as long as they're getting in you, it's ok.

I have been very much under the impression that besides for grapefruit juice, you can basically take any pills with pretty much anything unless they outright tell you. Like of course alcohol and caffeine drinks. But juices, tea, etc should really not make a difference and have always been fine for me :)

The recommended liquid to take medication with is water. Some other types of beverages as mentioned, like grapefruit and other juices can affect the breakdown and absorption of certain medications as does dairy based drinks like milk.

Dusty. :)

I usually need a little something to help get those big Smurf pills down -- a couple of chips, or crackers, etc. I wash that down with iced tea or Coke. My GI told me I could take Pentasa with or without food, no restrictions. There is nothing in the official Pentasa directions that contradicts this, so I think you are safe in taking these in whatever way works for you.

Keep in mind that unlike many other meds, Pentasa isn't designed to work in your stomach, so eating or drinking something that coats your stomach probably doesn't make much difference. The Pentasa capsules just pass on through anyway.

I always take my meds with water, but wish I could take them with rum and coke or a beer.:sign0144:

Wait I'm confused, as I continue looking at this thread, I feel like I have been uninformed of some rule that your supposed to take all pills with water always. I always just use whatever is around / available (not including alcohol and grapefruit juice). Now everyone is scaring me that I'm doing it wrong! Have my doctors failed to tell me to only use water?? Has no one ever told me cause they assumed I knew it?

All necessary information should be on the instructions that come with the prescription, every drug is different.

Of course, I always check, but if it doesn't say anything regarding what to take it with (none of my current meds specifically say anything on this) then I just carry on drinking them with tea or juice or soda or whatever.
sorry, I got all worried!
