I am having pain in my right calf muscle (maybe a sprain) but I noticed in one of my books that people with Crohns can develop DVT.

In an active flare your blood can become more 'sticky' and increase the risk of a blood clot. Something to bear in mind if you have other risk factors like smoking or birth control, or when travelling long distance.

Any inflammation in the body can increase the risk of blood clots. Because people with IBD often have inflammation we are at a higher risk, and while flaring it's even higher. As explained by a GI while I was hospitalized in July for my flare after being in the hospital in June with blood clots. I just finished the blood thinners last week.

You are still at a higher risk for clots, but below the knee isn't nearly as bad and is rarer than in the thigh. I'd take it easy for a bit if it gets worse, doesn't go away or the pain travels then see a doctor. I know for me the pain was crippling.

Hey Mary - is your leg feeling better?

Ditto to what vonfunk said. I don't want to sound like an alarmist, but if the cramp doesn't clear up soon I'd call your dr. I ended up with a dvt (and pe's and a couple superficial clots) last winter. The first symptom was cramps in my calves (I could hardly walk - lasted a week - the first dr. I went to didn't even think of checking for clots because I didn't have any swelling/redness).

I've heard that people with Crohn's are also prone to cramps, so hopefully that's all it is. But if this lasts longer than's typical for a cramp, call your dr - they can ultrasound your legs to see if there are any clots.
