Biopsy chronic inflammation consistent with crohns stool sample shows E. coli is it both

The biopsy is consistent with Crohn's Disease, so it is likely you have that.

The stool sample shows E. coli, which is an infection.

So yes, you can have both.

Thanks for your reply . I've been on prednisone for three weeks and am feeling pretty good so I was surprised when the Dr called to tell me I had e.coli and called in a prescription for Cipro. If I don't have symptoms should it be treated?
Cipro is pretty strong stuff and I'm prone to side effects.

You need to treat the E. coli, not knowing what strain it is, symptoms can vary from nothing to very severe, as found here on webmd -

What is an E. coli infection?

E. coli (Escherichia coli) is the name of a germ, or bacterium, that lives in the digestive tracts of humans and animals.

There are many types of E. coli, and most of them are harmless. But some can cause bloody diarrhea. Some strains of E. coli bacteria may also cause severe anemia or kidney failure, which can lead to death.

Other strains of E. coli can cause urinary tract infections or other infections.

As Lisa mentions, knowing the strain of E. coli is very important. E. coli normally lives quite harmlessly in the large bowel of pretty much 100% of all humans. It's part of the normal, healthy gut microbiome. It is only certain strains of E. coli that cause disease in humans, most notably certain strains normally found in cattle. Which is why you sometimes see outbreaks of pathogenic E. coli disease in humans when the food gets contaminated on the farm by cow dung.

Your post did not specify a strain of E. coli, so we can't tell if it's normal human E. coli or one of the more harmful strains. So for now, I'd say your main problem is the Crohn's until we find out more about that E. coli.

I would treat the infection, but also take probiotics to hopefully prevent negative effects of the antibiotic

Thank you all for your replies. I have always taken probiotics so I think I will double up. I don't know the strain of e coil but I see the Dr on Thursday.
I had an allergic reaction to the Cipro so starting a new antibiotic today.
Crohn's is a new diagnosis for me after many years of what I would call mild to moderate flares. This round I have been sick for about 3 months. I don't want to be told that it's just an e coil infection particularly since I hadn't had diarrhea for two weeks prior to taking the stool sample. I was already improved after two weeks on prednisone.

Another question - recent CT Enterography shows no active disease does this mean biopsy results are incorrect or can the prednisone have cleared things up.
