Hi, my son has just finished with his 8 week liquid diet and the 2 weeks of slow introduction of food again.
His dietician has said that in theory he can eat "everything" now as there is no scientific evidence to say that certain foods should be avoided.
However it makes sense to me that if an illness affects the intestines/stomach - surely the food you eat must make some difference to inflammation?
Does anyone know what kind of foods/drinks are best avoided to avoid irritating the stomach?

Hi Sascot,

When my son finished his 6-week liquid diet, we were given the following diet to follow to reintroduce foods.

Each stage lasted 3-4 days and his formula was tapered down at each level. He started at 2000 ml per day of formula and tapered down to 1000 ml per day (which he still continues with his food).

The diet was:

Stage 1: white bread (any type - sliced, italian, bagels, tortilla, etc.), broth, rice, potatos, rice krispie cereal (no milk), plain muffins, pasta. He was allowed a very small amount of toppings (butter, low fat cream cheese, strained tomato sauce, etc.). Clear juices, gatorade, etc.

Stage 2: low fat proteins - any type - eggs, chicken, fish, lamb, beef (I stuck with eggs, chicken and fish as I thought they would be easier to digest)

Stage 3: soft fruits and veggies. No seeds (tomato, cucumber, grape, skins (apple peels, pear skins, grape skins, zucchini skins), no membranes (the skin around orange segments).

Stage 4: low fat dairy

Stage 5: all other foods as tolerated

We were told my son should ALWAYS avoid:

- All seeds (veggie or fruit seeds, sesame, sunflower, poppy, seeds on strawberries, etc.)
- Nuts (peanut butter, nutella are fine, just not pieces of nuts)
- Corn kernals (foods made from corn, ie corn chips, don't bother him...)

Hope that helps... Good luck
