Dr got results of IBD Serology 7 and TPMT enzynme tests back. Called yesterday and said they were normal numbers. I"m requesting a copy of the lab report but if those number were normal then the markers for CD or UC was not present. At least thats my thought. Still researching it though. She did say she was going to start me on target does of Imuran, And since I have responded so well to the treatment she is still going to treat it as Crohns. I suppose my body forgot to read the chapters on how it was supposed to react to different things and bacteria. I must have dozed off in that class because it took months and tons of tests to Dx me. And another set of blood tests do do today. Was just wondering bout the two major tests and how reliable those results are.??? Anyone else have these done with "normal" numbers as result ?

hi Micheal

i don't know if it's just my area of the UK, but i never get told specific test results like that... only comments like "it's high" or "it's low" etc.. so i really don't know what your results indicate.

however, the main thing is that you're responding to the meds.. so that's good. have you had a colonoscopy with biopsies done yet?

My IBD test came back normal also. The actual terms on the test were "not consistent with IBD." My GI said that the test isn't 100% reliable and for like 20% of people the markers are not there. He said obviously I have it. They could see it in the colonoscopy. I stopped getting all caught up on whether or not I truly have the disease. The treatment that worked to get it under control was Entocort and for that I am thankful. Finally I have some normalcy in my life. Focus on the treatments that work for you and seek new ones if it isn't working.

Good luck!

There is currently a lot of controversy regarding the usefulness of Prometheus in diagnosing Crohn's. Professional articles that I have read online say that the Prometheus IBD serology 7 is only supposed to be used AFTER a diagnosis of IBD has been made in order to distinguish between Crohn's and UC. (It indicates other useful things about Crohn's once it's been diagnosed through standard methods)

The standard method for diagnosing Crohn's is biopsy of the colon wall. Once they knew something was wrong with my colon it took less than two weeks to diagnose it as Crohn's via a biopsy, not months. The serology tests were done after the diagnosis.

Here is a 12 page article on this from Mayo Clinic Read 2nd page for who serologic testing is NOT recommended for :
