Hi

Well got my provisional date for surgery (10th Nov) I am not sure what to expect, I know that it should take around 4 hours by keyhole and should have a feeding tube, nasal tube and catheter for the first few days. I am hoping that they will come out quickly.

I am presuming that i will have to have the kleen prep the day before and I am on a low residue diet already.

Any advice will be appreciated. I would like to know as much as possible before it happens.

Having 50cm of small intestine and some of the large plus the valve inbetween. It is being done by keyhole so hopefully the healing will be quicker. Go in on 10th Nov but unsure yet as to what is expected.

I hope you don't mind, but I've changed the title of your thread in an effort to get some people in here who have experienced the same. If you don't like it, I can change it back or to something else. I just want you to get some first hand accounts :)

Hi Warge
I had the same op four weeks ago. Maybe procedures vary between hospitals and also I was in for tests when they decided to do the surgery so I had a day's notice.
But I tell you, I am feeling really good.
I didn't do a prep but had to fast from midnight the night before. My op was about 4 hours too and I lost my IC valve, caecum, 30cm of bowel and a bit of bladder. No tubes, just an IV drip for a couple of days, and a catheter for 5.
They had me on an enhanced recovery so it was up for a wee while the day after, eat anything and as much as you want and lots of oral pain meds. I got home a week after the op.
Any questions you have, please fire away :)

Hi thanks for the info, i dont mind the iv had plenty of those, what bothers me is the catheter - never had one. I am presuming that I will have to be cleaned out but i am already on low residue diet so hopefully I will be super clean inside:)

What does enhanced recovery mean?

Some people have said will have a nasal tube and that does not thrill me:-(

I thought that people were on a diet of mush after it? Dont suppose you feel much like eating a lot do you?

I had a hysterectomy in 1991 so I am thinking that i may know what the tummy pain will be. Coughing and sneezing were not good:-( Did they teach you how to sneeze and cough? They have said 5-7 days in hospital.

I will be in a private hospital for the procedure as my employer gives private medical:) Good for me a I can choose when to have the procedure.

How do you feel now?

I was really glad I only had the one day's notice cos I am soooooo squeamish, but it really wasn't too bad at all. I was dreading the catheter but even that was fine and getting it out was painless. I did get a chest infection which was horrible and they told me to hug a pillow when coughing.
I think enhanced recovery is a new thing with resections, particularly laproscopic. It's all designed to get you mobile and back to normal as soon as possible.
Yea, I couldn't face too much solid food, especially as my bowel hadn't woken up properly by day 5 so had to have Movicol.
I still need painkillers now and again which surprises me as I had open surgery years ago and was off them after a week.
I am doing really well. Went back to work at the end of last week and drove the car for the first time today. People are commenting how well I look. I don't think I realised just how much the Crohn's had dragged me down.

I am scheduled for 10th Nov, see the anaesthetist on 2nd Nov as I suffer from all sorts of allergies and take loads of tablets already. No Klean Prep :) :) I am so pleased.
