Hi everyone, my son is 17 and has been diagnosed with indeterminate colitis. He has been dealing with it and his consultant placed him in remission 3 months ago but in the last 3-4 weeks he has been going approximately 2-3 times a day but losing loads of blood and the stomach pain has been unbearable. A week ago we took him to A&E and after 7 hours was told by his consultant to go home and he will organise an emergency sigmoidoscopy! We are still waiting for the appointment and still my son is in pain and losing blood!! We just don't know what's going on! The consultant seems unsympathetic as my son is not using the loo 20 times a day and his blood test was normal!! Our location at the moment is Wits End Corner!!Any ideas on what could be wrong with my son? Is it a flare? I must also mention my son is on 40mg prednisolone!
Many thanks

I would not opt for a sigmoidoscopy it only shows the last part of the colon if the inflammation is active higher up it will not be able to see it.

I would ask that lab work including CRP, fecal calprotectin stool test, then maybe colonoscopy, or imaging is done.

Hi I agree with clash get those test done if you can, push for them if need be. Sometimes we have to be forceful with medics as they will try to fob us off, don't take any prisoners when it comes to health.
Hope you can get this sorted out soon. Best wishes đź’•

I was in a similar situation to your son last month and j also have indeterminate colitis. My main symptoms started off as 30+ mouth ulcers for several weeks, then came the stomach pain and then every time I went to the bathroom I would just fill the bowl with bright red blood. I was also going to the toilet 4 times a day max.

I ended up going to a&e and staying in hospital twice for over a week at a time for IV steroids. It wasn't until my second hospital stay however that the frequency and urgency went up and I ended up having surgery to remove my entire colon and have an ileostomy fitted ( no meds were working at this point) because I couldn't keep hold of my blood.

Losing blood is very serious and I was incredibly sick despite frequency and urgency being the very last symptoms to present themselves. Please insist on a second opinion and push for tests and treatments. I hope he gets better soon!

I would also like to mention that I also have indeterminate colitis and I was on every drug you can think of. The second time I was admitted my bloods were also normal with my heamoglobin being the highest it had been in weeks but this dropped dramatically in the space of 3 hours to the point where I need 4 units of blood and an iron infusion. This disease can change rapidly!

it's possible the pred is working, considering he is going only 3x a day which is considered good. but the blood may be an issue if its only specs of blood in stool that's probably fine but if its turning the toilet water colors perhaps that is an issue. Both forms of IBD have blood symptoms but Ulcerative colitis tends to have more blood, perhaps your son has U.C.

Reducing refined sugars and total sugars from all sources in his diet can reduce some symptoms in IBD. And getting more fiber from whole grains like oats and wheat can help too until you get on a better drug treatment plan.
