Hi,

Am looking into protein bars and nearly all of them contain whey (all the good ones). Can anyone tell me if they take protein bars containing whey and if so does it affect their condition?

Cheers.

I used to loove the honey stinger protein bars but the whey makes my lungs close up and something else gives hell to my guts. Haven't found anything to replace them that I can eat :(

Most crohn's friends that I know that workout don't have any problems with whey protein. Whey isolate is extremely easy to digest. The reason some of you might have problems with the bars, is the sugar amount is most of em. Whey can also cause gas sometimes. It's been my main protein source for years...until now. I am trying to stay away from dairy, and whey isolate is a dairy form of protein. It didn't give me diahrea, just wanna eliminate dairy since I had the transplant. Now I stick to egg protein.

I have no issues with whey in protein bars but it's worth noting how many protein bars have sugar alcohols (look for less than about 8-10 grams of sugar or a denotation of sugar alcohols in the Nut. Facts)...those will make a Crohnie's arse turn into a volcano.

No issues with Protein Isolate powder, either. I greatly prefer them over soy (men should avoid soy)...

I was taking a protein powder with whey and had to stop because it affected me terribly.

Then I tried a protein powder with rice powder instead, and that was a bit better but again I had to stop. Which was a real shame as it was otherwise excellent.

Have you ever tried Cliff Bars? they are like 70 or 80% organic made with soy protein and friggen good eating. I used to take whey throughout high school but a minor flare a few months ago made me re-think that. Another plus is that they are sold at costco so bulk = way cheaper = :) Only downside is that some flavours contain nuts which for me is bad new bears

i have just started a thread about protein powder just before i spotted this thread lol what protein powders would people recommend? thanks in advance

ISOpure and Optimum Nutrition are two I've tried extensively, and are my favorites for lack of GI interference and cost/quality ratio, respectively...

May I ask how you, Mr. Ziggy, got into a transplant program? I have been on everything as well with poor results. Are you saying you got them IV? I had stem cell treatment IV with poor results.

Thank you Dusty. I appreciate your help. I am trying to see what options I have left. Not many since I have failed so much.

I am guessing this was placenta stem cell therapy you failed?

Ive done a lot of reading lately. I stay away from animal protein and I really run the other way if it is a milk protein like whey or casein (especially casein). I have been a pescetarian vegan now for about 1 year. I can't say I dont have gas or gas-related pain, but I haven't had much diarrhea. I have not had any surgery since two fistulas in 2003, and I had generally avoided red meat from that point on. But even now, eating mostly organic and vegan, I am definitely far from feeling "cured." So I am trying to figure out what else might help. Anyway, back to you, why not take a plant-based protein supplement! It doesn't carry the same risks as milk-protein supplements. I took a pea and brown rice protein formula when I was trying to build muscle. I think it was called "Vegan plus" and I got it from GNC. I liked it. It didn't taste that bad, especially if mixed with cranberry juice (sounds gross, but good). Oh, and Ditto to what Kanata said about Cliff bars!
