What Opaite painkillers do you take?
I take 2x 20mg oxycontin and 2x 5mg endone per day for breakthrough pain I am also interested what opiates other people try and which ones have works and those that have not worked, aswell as your dosage and anything else that you would like to say such as how much does it really reduce your pain out of 10 ?!

I do not currently take any pain meds, but my pain hits an 8 out of 10 on a lot of days. I do have xanax which calms the cramping down.
Overall when I was on pain meds I had codeine and oxyi, but I found out that the more I took them the worst the pain was. Narcotics slow down your digestive track, which does reduce the D, but can really irritate an inflamed or ulcerated gut.
I have less pain overall now that I do not take pain meds on a consistent basis, although I wish I had an active prescription right now due to a nasty flare.

I haven't had a huge amount of success with any pain relief, excluding huge doses of IV morphine at hospital.

I have in the past tried paracetamol, Nurofen plus (12.5 mg codeine + 200 mg ibuprofen). Neither of these had any effect at all.

My GP then prescribed me with codeine phosphate 30mg tablets (no other additives), This was 2 tablets as needed.. I didn't get any relief from, 2, 3, or 4 of these tablets. It was when I took 6 tablets (180mg) that I found some pain relief. It is worth noting that I certainly didn't experience any of the other "relaxing" opioid effects prior to the 180mg dose.

I discussed this with my Gastro, who decided it would be appropriate to prescribe me Endone 5mg (Oxycodone Hydrochloride) So far, I have had no relief when taking either one or two of these tablets (5-10mg). I'm certainly not keen to push the dose any further without my doctors' advice as I am acutely aware of the addictive properties of these medications through my line of work.

I have never had opioid based medications prior to what I have mentioned above. So I seem to just have an unusually high tolerance to them, or my body just can't metabolise/absorb opioids as well as other people. Which leaves me in a bit of a pickle of having to ask for huge quantities, and not look like junkie!

I don't require pain relief every day either. Only occasionally if the pain has been quite strong, for most of the day, and it just becomes too tiring to put up with anymore. I'm basically always in some sort of pain, but some days is just worse than others.

- And that my friend, is my experience with opioids.

Hi Roy,
That is interesting that the codiene did not work for you, but that may not be because you have a unusually high Tolerance to opiates, Codiene is a pro drug of morphine that has to be metabolised into morphine in the liver before it can have any effect, the specific liver enzyme responsible for this is CYP2D6 but 10% of Caucasians a poor metabolisers of codiene meaning that they lack the CYP2D6 enzyme so therefor only get limited analgesia from codiene, and as for oxycodone don't be discouraged 5-10mg is a small dose so Oxycodone may be effective at relievieing your pain as it is not a prodrug and is not metabolised by the liver.
Take care
Nathan

At the moment: Oramorph and Tramadol. I also have codeine which I take for diarrhoea. Generally Oramorph am and pm, codeine 60mg at noon. Tramadol if I am out and about as don't want to take the Oramorph with me. Amitryptline 100mg at night for post neuralgic pain. I had to fight for the Oramorph, took my 2 GI visits and a whole lot of pleading. If I start to get constipated, I stop all opiates. Tried buscopan but doesn't help.

Oh I am glade to hear you have gotten some half decent relief and may I ask what dose of oramorph do you take and is it a syrup or a tablet? And does you doctor allow you to take more on bad days? Is your GP tight with the pain medications? I think most of us can relate. Do you find tramadol very effective I have never had it? ( I can't because I take Prozac a SSRI)

The Oramorph is a solution and I take 5ml which is 10mg once or twice a day. I think both my GP and GI would rather I didn't take it, but I don't find Tramadol that effective to honest. In the UK it has been reclassified as a controlled drug so I suspect it will get prescribed less - it was thought to be less addictive than opiates but new studies have suggested that it is as open to misuse as them. I was on a SSRI a while back and was prescribed it, I didn't realise it was contraindicated. My problems are functional, too many surgeries which have left me with adhesions and IBS and I think another stricture but that is in dispute LOL. I did go to a pain clinic but I hated it. They prescribed lyrica which I had to take twice a day and made me fall asleep all the time and I asked not to go back. GP is tighter with Valium, I get 10 every two months. They help if I get constipated and cannot take pain meds. It is a vicious cycle. More surgery might resolve some of the issues but make others worse so I am stuck. :(

I found Hydromorphone to me was the most effective. I had morphine once after surgery for a few days, it worked a little. Then I got Percocets, They just kind of made me tired and sleep through the pain. One time i got readmitted to the hospital a week after surgery. They kept giving me dilaudid, which is hydromorphone. That took away all pain and kind of got me loopy for like 20-30 minutes. Hydromorphone is the only painkiller that actually alleviates pain for me.

Hi daisy,
I am pleased to hear that you have found some relief in oramorph, I don't think anyone should be left in pain in the 21st century if we have drugs that can stop it, people think it's cruel to leave animals in pain, so why do we leave people in pain without any pain relief, 20mg of morphine is a very low dose, you have every right to ask you doctor for pain relief, both my GI and my GP understand that I suffer from severe pain and that I need to get relief I would expect no less of my doctors they are there to help make my life easier and improve my quality of life, opiate adiction in chronic pain patients is also extreamly rare occurring in less then %3 of patients when taken as perscribed. I know for certain that without some form of strong painkiller I would not be able to get out of bed and go to school to do my HSC to get into pharmacy, I would net be able to go out to dinner nor would I be able to go out with friends me GI and GP understand this that's why the perscribe me adequate pain relief so that I can be as normal as a 17 year old with sever crohns and panic disorder/general anxiety disorder.

Kind regards and best wishes
Nathan
